Go To

The events of this episode are set during October 3rd, 1993, 1994 and 1995

In 1995 the court case begins.

In 1994, on the Marsha Bailey show, Kate accuses Jeanette of having seen her at Martin's and purposely not reported her. Greg and Jeanette watch the show, horrified. And not only them, as right after the show, Rod and Joy shout at her for going off script and breaking the law. Meanwhile, a mortified Jeanette cuts off her long hair.

In 1995, on their way out of the court house, both Kate and Jeanette are harassed by journalists. The next day, after Kate states in court that Martin got her in his basement by giving her a ride home and offering her a drugged soda, Denise produces her chat log with "Berenice4", exposing her lie. Later, Nick chides her for dealing a blow to their case and reveals "Berenice4" to be Ashley. As Joy and Rod call Ashley, Kate messages her stepsister on their Chatroom, where she is ghosted by Ashley. Jamie comes to see Ben, who doesn't want to see him and doesn't accept his apology. Jamie doesn't insist, but instead asks him to not blame Vince. Ben comes to the video store and admits to Vince he misses him, but with Vince unwilling to forgive him for abandoning him, Ben can only regain his trust over time.

Upset with still not remembering who Annabelle is, Kate decides to do something her therapist advised her to do: go to Martin's house to meet Jeanette. After a shouting match, they combine their efforts to figure out what happened. Reconsituting the events of Jeanette’s break-in on Christmas Eve, Kate mentions Jeanette making eye contact with her after putting on her hood and riding off on a bike with a "stupid card on the wheel". Jeanette realizes the person who saw Kate was not her, but Mallory.

In 1993, as Jeanette arrives at Martin's on Christmas Eve, she is spotted by Mallory. Mallory sees a woman standing in Martin's house and, anticipating to see Jeanette getting caught, hides behind a tree to watch, but to her diappointment Jeanette manages to run away. While putting on a hoodie and preparing to follow her, she hears a noise in the house and turns towards the noise, not seeing Kate, but unknowingly locking eyes with her, while all Kate sees is a shadowy figure turned her way.

Mallory bursts into Jeanette's room and accuses her of being a hypocrite, lecturing her about the illegal items on her list while continuously breaking into Martin's house. Jeanette gives her the snow globe she stole and kicks her out.

In 1995, as the realization kicks in, Kate apologizes to Jeanette. But there is still unfinished business: the girls go down to the basement to unlock Kate's memory about Annabelle. As they see a big red spot on the carpet, Kate starts remembering.

In 1994, the night before Kate's rescue. Martin comes down to the basement, terrified. He tells Kate the police came to his house and it's only a matter of time before they come back with a warrant. Desperate, he pulls out a gun nicknamed "Annabelle" which he inherited from his father, who killed himself with it. Kate is afraid Martin will kill her, but after apologizing to Kate, he tries to kill himself instead. When he cannot do it, he drops the gun, which Kate picks up. Hearing Martin change his tune and remembering everything he put her through, she shoots him, killing him instantly. Several blocks away, Jamie and Jeanette return from her birthday party, when they hear the gunshot.

After spending the night sitting by his body, Kate calls the cops in the morning. The police assume Martin has been killed in a shootout.

In 1995, Kate feels guilty for killing Martin, but Jeanette reassures her. Kate encourages Jeanette to go on with her lawsuit, but Jeanette decides to drop it. After a heart-to-heart with her, Kate announces to the press that Jeanette is innocent and has been unfairly maligned.

Kate catches Mallory as she is packing her bag, preparing to run away. Mallory explains that she didn't recognize the woman in the house, that she thought she saw Martin's girlfriend or sister, and didn't give it much thought. She had no idea it was Kate, it only dawned on her after she saw the news of Kate's rescue, after which she kept quiet because revealing her secret would expose Kate's story as a lie. Ashamed, Mallory decides to skip town, but Kate stops her and they hug.

A month later in November, Jeanette gives an interview on the Marsha Bailey Show as the "most wronged woman" in America, where she publicly forgives Kate. Watching her interview, Mallory can't help getting creeped out by Jeanette replicating Kate's behavior and outfit from a year ago, but Kate doesn't care, and suggests they go out for a drive. During the drive they get out of the car and dance together, after which they kiss.

In early 1994, Jeanette sneaks into Martin's house. As she walks past the basement, she hears a female voice calling for help. She starts reaching for the door handle, but as soon as the voice identifies herself as Kate Wallis, she stops and smiles.

Tropes Used:

  • Anachronic Order: Second episode to mostly avert this trope. The episode takes place in 1995, with scenes from 1994 opening and closing the episode, and more scenes set in 1993 and 1994 acting as flashbacks, with no proper storylines of their own.
  • Book Ends:
    • The pilot has a scene set in 1993 where Jeanette surprises Greg in the kitchen at night eating her birthday cake and joins in. This episode has a similar scene in 1995, but with ice cream, and Jeanette and Greg's roles reversed.
    • The first episode ends with an interview from the Marsha Bailey Show in which Kate angrily denounces Jeanette. Towards the end of this one, in a very similar interview, Jeanette calmly forgives Kate.
    • Kate's first 1995 scene in the pilot has her dancing in front of her car at night, calling someone (revealed to be Mallory in this episode) to join her. Her last 1995 scene in the finale has her dancing in front of her car again, but this time during the day and with Mallory.
  • Once More, with Clarity:
    • The scene from Christmas Eve, where Kate looks outside the window after turning off the light and bumping into decorations, has an additional part: the shadowy figure doesn't immediately ride off on their bicycle, but stands still and stares directly at Kate for a moment first. It is replayed again later, revealing the figure in question to be Mallory.
    • Kate's first scene from 1995, where she danced to Zombie in front of a car and called someone sitting in the car to join her, is shown under a different angle, revealing her companion to be a teary-eyed Mallory.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Kate, unknowingly. She was wrong about Jeanette seeing her in 1993. But the final shot reveals that she heard her in 1994.
