This episode provides examples of:
- Buried Alive: The UnSub buries his victims alive. Angel managed to escape on his own while Billy is just barely saved in time by Rossi.
- Interrupted Suicide: Angel, overwhelmed with trauma, attempts to kill himself by slashing his wrist with a scalpel, but Morgan and JJ manage to save him.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Morgan tackles the UnSub and violently pummels him excessively for what he did to Angel until Rossi stops him.
- Not the First Victim: The UnSub's current victim, Billy Henderson, discovers Angel's carving of angel wings in the bunker, causing him to discover the man who abducted him has done this before.
- Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Angel manages to escape from his captor offscreen. His escape kickstarts the episode’s plot.
- Papa Wolf: Morgan becomes fiercely protective of Angel throughout the episode and is able to relate to the boy due to their similar pain. When arresting the UnSub, Morgan tackles him to the ground and punches him extensively. Rossi has to step in to keep Morgan from beating the man to death.
- When He Smiles: Angel mostly bears a stoic expression due to the abuse he’s endured since his abduction. When JJ and Morgan get him to open up, he starts to smile.
- Morgan: "Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it." Michel de Montaigne.
