Jareau: Jean Racine said, "A tragedy need not have blood and death. It's enough that it all be filled with that majestic sadness that is the pleasure of tragedy."
A teenager goes missing during spring break with her friends, and the main suspects are two young men she didn't want to have sex with.

Provides examples of:

  • Author Tract: It's very clear that this episode was the cast and showrunners' form of protest against removing A.J. Cook from the show.
    • The dialogue for the cast members also sounds like they could be comments regarding her firing as well, especially from Garcia and JJ herself during the ending speech.
  • Character Focus: JJ, obviously. Even in the title.
  • The Heart: Garcia mentions that JJ is this to the team, serving as their "glue".
  • Metaphorically True: Both suspects succeed in the polygraph test; even the culprit passed, because he disposed of her unconscious body in shark-infested waters, meaning that he really didn't know where the body was and didn't kill her.
  • Mirror Character: Kate to Jennifer. Kate's mother even tells Agent Jareau after hearing her first name that they almost named their daughter "Jennifer", and since her last name is Joyce, they would have called her JJ. Like Jennifer, Kate is protective of vulnerable kids, an athlete, and a Plucky Girl who spends three days holding on for dear life.
  • No One Could Survive That!: What was assumed of Kate Joyce considering she was out in shark-infested waters for three days. Turns out, she is a good swimmer and survived by staying on a buoy for that long.
  • Really Dead Montage: One of the Put on a Bus variety for JJ at the end of the episode.
