Recap / Code Lyoko S 3 E 10

Go To

Ulrich gets to be a Guinea pig in an experiment for Jérémie; getting to Sector 5 without a transporter, buts split between worlds, with his ghostly presence allowing him to Body Surf to talk to Jérémie about what happened, much to the relief of a very worried Yumi. However, it turns out that Ulrich's body has been taken over by XANA, who plans to use his movesets to destroy the core of Lyoko.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Body Surf: Ulrich does this with Kiwi and Jim.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: While possessing Jim's body, Ulrich uses Jim's catchphrase.
Ulrich (in Jim's body): I'd rather not talk about it.
    • As does Odd when Jim ends up slumped inside the factory.
Odd: I guess this will be one of those things he’d rather not talk about.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Ulrich has to affect Jim's voice when he possesses Jim's body.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This exchange between Mr. Delmas and one of the teachers:
Mr. Delmas: So now we come to the case of Ulrich Stern. Anyone care for some turnip soup? I'm afraid that's all there is.
Mr. Fumet: I think we have a serious problem.
Mr. Delmas: Yes, this is scandalous! They could've left some sort of variety like tomato, or vegetables or even just coffee!
Mr. Fumet: No, I was referring to Ulrich Stern.
  • Drawing Straws: Or green beans in this case. used to work out who's going to be the guinea pig for materializing into Sector 5; Ulrich loses.
  • Demonic Possession: XANA does this to Ulrich's body on Lyoko, after its separation from Ulrich's consciousness.
    • A benign version of this trope happens when Ulrich takes over Kiwi and later Jim.
  • Foreshadowing: Yumi takes Odd's cherry cola can after they all draw straws as to who'll be virtualised into Sector 5. After Ulrich disappears, and Jérémie profusely apologizes and tries to work out what happened, Yumi is seen with the cola can, and using it as a memento of Ulrich.
  • Food Fight: Odd and the other students (minus Yumi and Aelita) engage in one and pelt Ulrich-in-Jim's-body with bread when he tries to get them to stop. He later fishes out a croissant out of his tracksuit.
  • Heroic BSoD: The Lyoko Warriors undergo a significant one when Ulrich's virtualization into Sector 5 goes wrong and there's a chance that he may truly be gone forever. Yumi in particular takes it pretty hard and harshly snaps at Jéremie for possibly costing them Ulrich's life.
  • Hope Spot: Jéremie believes that he just found out how to virtualize someone directly into Sector 5. Then he tries the process on Ulrich and he disappears.
  • Intangible Man: Ulrich's consciousness is intangible in the real world while separated from his body. On Lyoko, XANA is able to make Ulrich's body intangible, allowing it to pass through walls in Sector 5. Jérémie is not able to do the same for Yumi and Aelita.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Ulrich-in-Jim's-body makes the excuse that he and Odd need to go to the bathroom after giving that emotional speech to the meeting.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Nicholas mocks Ulrich for his bad grades just to learn less than a minute after that he got a 0 on a test.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Mrs. Hertz can punch Jim to the ground at the end of the episode, even though by her build, you wouldn't guess she is able to do such a thing.
  • Mysterious Animal Senses: Kiwi is able to sense Ulrich's consciousness when he shows up in Jéremie's room.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: XANA uses Ulrich's body on Lyoko in an attempt to destroy the core of Lyoko.
  • Running Gag: One of Jims' many jobs was apparently a professional ballroom dancer, something Mrs. Hertz uses.
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: Aelita is somehow able to move from the cafeteria to the lab with Jeremie without any excuse whatsoever.
  • Stern Teacher: Mrs. Hertz believes that transferring Ulrich to 9th grade remedial is his only hope of catching up, even after a moving speech from a Ulrich-possessed Jim that managed to convince all the other teachers in the room. This is ultimately subverted when Ulrich (in Jim's body) promises to teach Mrs. Hertz all the ballroom dances she wants and then she backs up.
  • Verbal Backspace: Ulrich when in Jims' body keeps saying "I" instead of "Me".
  • Voices Are Mental: Ulrich still has the same voice while possessing Kiwi and Jim.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Yumi gives a fierce one to Jeremie before running home crying.
Yumi: (to Jeremie) Go on. You can keep trying. (turns to face Jeremie) But the truth is you messed up big time, and Ulrich might be lost forever!
