Recap / Centurions Ep 61 "Man or Machine, Part 1"

Go To

Hacker, working for Doc Terror, steals a disc containing information about the location of a small star in the Milky Way. With this information, Terror receives a radio transmission from the star; it tells him information to construct a special machine that the deranged scientist believes will be the key to defeating the Centurions and conquering Earth. Meanwhile the Centurions are introduced to their new Assault Weapon Systems — the Strato Strike for Ace, the Fathom Fan for Max, and the Awesome Auger for Jake. But that isn't all, as the Centurions are now joined by two more members: energy specialist Rex Charger and Stealth Expert John Thunder. As the original Centurions greet their new teammates, Terror finishes constructing the machine — which turns out to be an alien AI, who identifies himself as Gog. Gog hails from a world that was inhabited by warlike Human Aliens who finally destroyed each other, leaving behind [AIs] like Gog himself. Using Doc Terror's machines, Gog in turn creates Magog, a hulking robot that acts as Gog's enforcer.

Tropes Xtreme!:

  • Badass Bookworm: Rex is a brilliant scientist, and it's noted that he needs to learn to act as well as think. Fortunately, he's a quick study, and soon he's blowing up Mecha-Mooks with the best of them.
  • Badass Native: Max describes John as "a full-blooded Chiracahua Apache". Overlaps with Token Minority.
  • Cool Boat: Max's airboat-like Fathom Fan.
  • Cool Plane: Ace's Strato Strike, a combination VTOL and fighter jet.
  • Drill Tank/This Is a Drill: Jake's Awesome Auger weapon system consists of a giant drill attached to a tank-like body.
  • Famous Ancestor: Max says that John is "a direct descendant of Geronimo".
  • Friend to All Living Things: John's first appearance shows him riding through the desert on a horse, then removing a rattlesnake from his path instead of harming it.
  • Human Aliens: The original inhabitants of Gog's unnamed homeworld.
  • Millionaire Playboy: Rex was one (as well as a scientist) before becoming a Centurion.
  • Product-Promotion Parade: The scene where Dr. Mai-Ling introduces Max, Jake and Ace to their new Assault Weapon Systems.
  • Sixth Ranger: Rex and John join the Centurions in this episode.
  • Spy-Tux Reveal: A parka-clad Rex does a variation when he first appears. On a mountain in Iceland, he uses one of his inventions to draw heat from a volcano, then removes the parka (revealing the tux underneath) and has a formal dinner in the middle of nowhere, complete with robot waiter!
