!Behind Your Back

At their penthouse apartment, Stephanie and Mark discuss the latter's feature article for ''Communique''. She tells him that she's written some editor's notes for the piece, but he tells her that he may as well rewrite it. After she leaves for work, he calls Carrie and leaves a message telling her that he wants to speak with her later that day. Stephanie eventually decides to can the story and Mark angrily leaves after finding out about it.

Alex successfully lobbies Ben to write a story on the [[Recap/CentralParkWestS01E10Showgirls gala altercation for the Globe]], but she's stopped by Allan, who calls her and tells her that he has an even bigger story he wants to pitch to her if she agrees to hold off running the story. When Alex goes to meet him, he shows off an undeveloped piece of land, and says that he's planning to build a new casino.

Nikki hands over a stack of purchase receipts for gifts Allan bought her and a chronicle of their affair to Linda. Despite her initial reluctance, she agrees to endure the public scrutiny of the divorce for a $15 million payout.

Peter and Gil have a discussion about relationships. Peter pledges not to get involved with anyone else, but that day, he runs into a student named Robin Gaynor during a lecture he's teaching at New York University who is smitten with him. Afterwards, he offers to take her out for coffee and they discover they have a lot in common. He offers to take her out for dinner and she accepts before leaving.

Mark calls Carrie and leaves an impassioned voice message asking her to be with him. It is revealed that she is recording the message, and picks up the phone then tells him that their affair is over. She tells him to go back home to Stephanie, then calls her work voicemail and replays the conversation into the phone.

The next morning, Rachel walks into the office and sees everyone gossiping. When she checks her voicemail, she and other staffers discover that Carrie's message has been circulated throughout the office, and Carrie tells her that she's looking forward to the fireworks that will take place.

At the staff meeting, Stephanie unsuccessfully tries to lobby the other writers for ideas, but they're all distracted. She returns to her office after and hears the voicemail. She reels in shock at Mark's voice, then storms out of her office.

Carrie is sitting in her office when Stephanie storms in and confronts her about the affair. She tells Carrie that she's a "cheap whore" before walking out and yelling at everyone to get back to work. Rachel goes into the office afterwards and admits that Carrie's ploy was a stroke of genius. Stephanie goes to Mark at his work and tells him that their relationship is over. Rachel visits Stephanie the next day and tells her that she's set up a stay at a retreat for her to get her mind off Mark, and Stephanie thanks her for her forethought and caring.

Gil invites Peter out to a gentlemen's club to take his mind off the breakup with Alex, but Peter is shocked to discover that Robin is also working as a dancer. Despite Gil's happiness, Peter leaves the club.

The next night, Peter goes back to the club and buys Robin's time for the night. She comes up to him and yells at him for seeing her there, but he tells her that he wanted to take her out for dinner. Afterwards, they eat at a local diner and is doing it to support her education and ailing mother.

Mark returns home and attempts to reconcile with Stephanie, but she yells at him and tells him what a failure he's been before packing her bags and leaving for the retreat without him knowing. Afterwards, Mark goes to the Zinc Bar and finds Carrie chatting up the bartender. When he rails at Carrie for destroying his marriage, the bartender attempts to force him out, only to be beaten down by him in response. Mark storms out as Carrie looks on.

Rachel sees Stephanie off at the train station, but it's revealed that Rachel is using the situation for her own ends, and she intends to seize control of the publication...
