Go To

One quiet morning in Lindenfeld, Trevor takes time to himself to question what exactly he is doing with his life, wondering why he was letting Sypha so close to him after a lifetime spent alone and hated. The Judge approaches him, the small pond where Trevor arrived being a place where he can enjoy some solitude. The conversation turns to the Judge's philosophies of being the leader of a small town, and of leaving one's home in the belief of never returning. When the two walk back into town, however, they notice something peculiar: a strange mark carved onto the town's gate.

Meanwhile, in the priory, Saint-Germain takes advantage of a moment alone to pull a mysterious gem from his pocket. The gem glows with a bright light: an indication that his quarry is within the priory. When he tries to follow the light into the priory's basement, however, Sala stops him. Saint-Germain notices another peculiar sigil on the ceiling of the tunnel leading underground: the same mark as on the monks' armbands. Sypha approaches Saint-Germain when he steps out and questions Saint-Germain as to his goal. Saint-Germain reveals that he is after something occult in nature. There is, of course, something devious going on within the priory, as Saint-Germain could detect the presence of a night creature. They then notice another symbol carved into a building, which they recognize as the alchemical symbol for lead, which also denoted "transformation and redemption". Combined with the armbands the monks wore with the alchemical symbol for sulfur, this proves disconcerting. Trevor approaches them and states that he found a symbol like that earlier, then at Trevor's insistence, takes the Count for a drink.

At the tavern, Saint-Germain reveals the reason he came to Lindenfeld: he is in search of the Infinite Corridor, a magical pathway that, according to legends, could lead to distant worlds...or into Hell. Saint-Germain had been inside the Corridor once before, and explains that it can lead literally anywhere. A dear friend of his was lost in the Corridor, and he sought it out to reunite with them. The Corridor's existence beneath the priory, in addition to the "Visitor" the monks worshiped and the alchemical symbols, had to be related to one another...

Tropes

  • A Tankard of Moose Urine: Saint-Germain is very unimpressed by the tavern's wine, asking a passing waiter if they shit on the grapes.
  • Contemplation Location: The Judge likes to come to the pond when he needs some time alone to think.
  • Dramatic Irony: Trevor and the Judge discuss Saint-Germain with disgust, calling him untrustworthy and a charlatan. What they don't know is that this description used to fit Saint-Germain, but now he is a man on a much more noble quest.
  • Foreshadowing: The Judge points out that the pond is a quiet place when he needs time to think. Trevor notes that the Judge's house has a door, but the Judge notes that sometimes it's not enough. This becomes significant later.
  • Jesus Was Way Cool: The Speakers might not like God but they do appreciate what Jesus did.
  • Mirror Monologue: Trevor holds a conversation with his own reflection in a pond when he questions his life's choices.
  • Noodle Incident: Saint-Germain claims to have invented absinthe, and woken up three weeks later somewhere else entirely. Trevor also mentions how a relative of his encountered the Infinite Corridor once, and she took down the castle it was in.
  • Oh, Crap!: Saint-Germain has one when Sypha points out the "Visitor" might still be inside the priory, near the Corridor.
  • The Reveal: We learn this episode what Saint-Germain has come to Lindenfeld for.
