On Alpha Flight Space Station, Carol Danvers watches her friends and squadmates repair damage caused by a previous battle. She goes inside and introduces herself to three new Alpha Cadets. The first is Dante, who was endorsed by Black Widow. The second is Glory, who has cybernetic legs and won a science prize sponsored by Tony Stark. The third and final recruit is A'di, who has brought her companion drone Itz and who was endorsed by Black Panther. Danvers tells them she will be very hard on them so that they will be ready to lead their own squad when the time comes. As such, she locks them in a battle simulation room called the "blood shed", activates the 'Chitauri invasion' sequence, and tells them they have half an hour to escape.
Danvers talks to Abigail Brand, another member of her team, and says that she's being hard on the new recruits because the world is dangerous. She lists several recent tragedies the heroes have endured, including Rhodey's death and Tony Stark becoming an AI. Brand is skeptical of the new recruits, saying A'di is just a wannabe member of the dora milaji, Dante is essentially a mall security guard, and Glory's only real accomplishment is building her own cybernetic legs. Brand insists none of the three new recruits will be able to serve in combat, to which Danvers responds she's sent another teammate named Gwendolyn "Wendy" Kawasaki to pick up some protective gear.
Danvers then talks to Hopper, a scientist from Stark Industries who is on the satellite. He gives her an amulet that, when broken, will temporarily abate the hala effect (a deleterious effect which recently afflicted Danvers). Before Danvers can go back to get her new recruits out of the training simulation, though, Hopper mentions an unannounced ship that recently docked with their satellite. Before Danvers can ask him for more information she's summoned to the bridge. She gets there just in time to see that several other heroes have arrived, and they inform her that a massive Chitauri invasion fleet is headed for them. She orders everyone to battle stations as alarms begin to sound.
In the blood shed, the new recruits battle simulated Chitauri. Glory and A'di want to hack the simulation into shutting down, but Itz can't reach the nearest terminal. Glory borrows Dante's sword and jumps for it, as Dante muses that she has great legs before quickly clarifying he was just referencing how well they were engineered.
Danvers talks to Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers, who tell her Earth's planetary protection shield is down. This means that Danvers' team, augmented with the other heroes who joined her, is the only force capable of holding back the Chitauri from destroying the Earth. She accepts the responsibility, but notes that the Chitauri force is huge and she has no idea how to win the fight.
Chitauri begin attacking the satellite, with some smashing into the blood shed, deactivating the simulation, and scaring the new recruits. Soldiers in the satellite, however, drive them off. Outside the satellite, Danvers leads her team into combat, but Hyperion is soon wounded and Quasar is killed. A Chitauri gets into the satellite but Glory is able to fight it off with flamethrowers built into her cybernetic legs. Then the shield comes back online and secures Earth against the Chitauri swarm.
All seems well, but then Rogers messages Danvers and says he won't lower the shield to let the heroes in. Danvers realizes how Rogers betrayed them as Rogers hangs up on her, and she vows to get revenge on him.
