Tropes

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: While teasing Calvin, Hobbes asks if he should wear spats to the wedding.
  • The Gadfly: Knowing that Calvin is terrified that his horoscope concerning the opposite sex finding him irresistible will come true, Hobbes continually teases him all morning about what might happen that day.
  • Girls Have Cooties: When Calvin's second horoscope says he'll have a lucky day for romance, he rockets into the air, screaming in horror. His exasperated mom has to chase him down and pry him off the furniture as he begs to stay home "sick", away from Susie and any other girls who might kiss him at school.
  • Horrorscope: Calvin's second horoscope says that the opposite sex will find him irresistible and that it's a good day for love, which Calvin is horrified by and he does all he can to prevent it from happening.
  • Implied Death Threat: Downplayed; when Hobbes asks if he should wear spats to Calvin's wedding, Calvin snaps that he'll be wearing a body cast shortly as they start a fistfight.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Because of his horoscope telling him that he'll have many 'key policies implemented', Calvin believes that he'll be able to skip his homework and bath and stay up late. Every time, his mom immediately forces him to do those things.
  • Original Position Fallacy: Calvin decides he believes in horoscopes because his prediction for the day says he'll get "many key policies implemented." He fails to realize until the next day that he might not always like the predictions that he's chosen to believe.
  • Superstition Episode: The arc centers on Calvin deciding to believe in horoscopes because his prediction for that day implies that he'll get his way. The next day's horoscope predicts zooming popularity and luck with the opposite sex, which horrifies him. Neither of them come true, and Calvin grouches during another bath that Mom's predictions are more accurate and the newspaper should print those instead.
