"Us and Them" is the 10th and last episode of the first season of Bosch.

Bosch has to go to a police psychiatrist after he shot and killed Raynard Waits. She expresses reluctance to let him back on duty. He tells her that he doesn't feel conflicted about the death of Waits, that Waits committed Suicide by Cop.

Eventually he is cleared, and returns to the hunt for Johnny Stokes. Bosch follows a lead from Stokes's parole file to a condemned apartment building where Stokes used to roust out squatters. Sure enough he's there, and the LAPD hauls him in. Stokes admits to being on the hill and claims that Arthur fell out of a tree, but Bosch, who notes that Stokes buried Arthur, isn't fooled.

While all that is going down, Madeline Bosch hops a bus from Las Vegas to LA. Eleanor calls Harry, freaking out. Harry meets Maddie at the bus station and gives her a good tongue-lashing. Then they bond during a day hanging out in Los Angeles before Harry takes Maddie to the airport and Eleanor takes her home.

Bosch is called in to Deputy Chief Irving's office. Irving tells him that with Stokes arrested for murder, his testimony against Brasher is worthless and that Julia has dropped her harassment complaint against Bosch in return for reinstatement. Julia meets Bosch outside the building and tries to make amends, but Harry, incensed at everything that happened, blows her off.

Bosch and Edgar meet with the DA's office and are shocked to learn that Stokes will go free; he was 14 at the time of the murder and thus can't be charged. Stokes is released. When Captain Pounds gets in Harry's face and taunts him about the failure to charge Stokes, Harry throws him through a plate-glass window. He is suspended.

Harry hands over his badge and gun to a regretful Billets. As he's going home Bosch hears surprising news. Samuel Delacroix, having heard that Johnny Stokes would not be charged with Arthur's murder, went to the abandoned apartment building, found Stokes, and shot him dead. On that note, Harry heads to Vegas, and Season 1 of Bosch ends.

Tropes:

  • Abandoned Area: The creepy, abandoned, garbage-strewn derelict apartment building where the cops find Stokes.
  • Book Ends: At the very end, right before Harry leaves, Edgar says "The rain will come, wash all this shit away." That's what Bosch said to Edgar in the first scene of the first episode.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Maddie, who has been getting into fights with her mom, hops a bus to LA. Eleanor flips her lid. Harry, who knows what he's talking about, tells Maddie that moms are important.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Throughout the season Madeline Bosch has been calling her father "Harry". After reading his file from McClaren Youth Hall, and the things he went through, she says "I'm really sorry you had to go through that, Dad." She calls him "Dad" from then on.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In City of Bones, Johnny Stokes was killed by Officer Edgewood as revenge for Julia Brasher's death. Since Julia is still alive here, it's Samuel Delacroix who does the killing.
  • "Friends" Rent Control: Harry's palatial house has already been explained (he got paid when one of his cases was made into a movie), but it's still funny when Maddie gets her first look and says "Are you on the take?"
  • Off on a Technicality: Stokes is arrested for killing Arthur but is set free because, as someone who was 14 at the time, he cannot be tried as an adult; and it's too late to try him as a minor ever since he became 25.
  • The Shrink: Dr. Hinojos has her doubts but signs off on returning Harry to duty.
  • Title Drop: When Julia is trying to justify pinning blame on Stokes, she says "There's us and there's them." Harry, who believes in a code of honor, doesn't agree.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Played straight, as Bosch has to put his badge and gun on Lt. Billets's desk, after he's suspended for assaulting Pounds.
  • Vigilante Execution: Samuel Delacroix murders Stokes after Stokes is set free. When Bosch confronts him, Delacroix says "I did what you couldn't."
