Tropes

  • Actor Allusion: Sweets reads up on Ray Buxley, the custodian of Dr. Brennan's old high school, and how he was a suspect in the death of one of her classmates. Sweets then comments that he finds him "Creepy. He's like, "Freddy" creepy...". Mr. Buxley is played by Robert Englund?
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Ray, whose body language makes you think he's a creep, warns Brennan not to trust smiley people like Julie, who turns out to be the murderer.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Early on, it's revealed that one of Brennan's classmates was murdered a few decades ago while they were still in school, and that the case was never solved. At the end of the episode, it's revealed that both the killer and the victim were the perpetrators, so they could have her boyfriend.
  • Dutch Angle: Playing up the high school horror element, there's a lot of these in the episode.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: The squints and Booth gather in the usual restaurant to celebrate. After the sound turns off and all we hear is music, they all take turns laughing at each other's stories.
  • Face of a Thug: Despite his sometimes creepy demeanor, Ray Buxley is perfectly nice and friendly and Brennan still has fond memories of her time with him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: It turns out the victim's murder was this, because she had murdered another classmate decades earlier so she could have the classmate's boyfriend.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Twice. The killer and the victim murdered the victim's then-girlfriend back in high school so they could have him to theirselves. They were supposed to 'share', but the victim 'hogged' the boyfriend for the next couple of decades. The killer snapped, killed the victim, so she could have her 'turn' with the boyfriend. Notably the boyfriend was unaware of any of this.
  • Oh, Crap!: Hodgins lets slip about Angela's Pregnancy Scare to Wendell, then realizes Angela hadn't told him and bolts for her office to apologize profusely and then run away from the confrontation between her and Wendell.
  • Stab the Salad: Played for laughs several times with Mr. Buxley, the creepy janitor at Bones' high school — played by Freddy Krueger, no less.
  • Stepford Smiler: When Brennan turns out to be the most normal alumnus from her high school, you can sure bet there's some.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Booth and Brennan go semi-undercover to Bones' high school reunion, with Booth posing as her husband. Made a thousand times more awkward by the fact that this came right after the episode where he confessed his love for her and she said she didn't want to start a relationship.
  • Wall of Weapons: More like Wall Of Potential Weapons. Ray Buxley's maintenance workshop is chock full of sharp tools mounted on pegboards, the ominousness of which is played up for all it's worth.
