Recap / Bones S 5 E 12 The Proof In The Pudding

Go To

The lab is locked down at the behest of mysterious government agents led by Mr. White (Richard T. Jones) to identify a highly-classified set of remains that Hodgins soon realizes may very well be those of President JFK. Meanwhile, Angela fears she might be pregnant after taking a pregnancy test that Cam mistakenly believes is her daughter Michelle's.

Tropes

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's never confirmed one way or the other that the bones are those of JFK.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Attempted by Hacker. Alas for him:
Hacker: Ten seconds earlier and I would have been the hero, right?
  • Break Out the Museum Piece: They had to break out an old Kennedy-era replica rifle for Booth so that he can prove that the corpse, presumed to be John F. Kennedy, was not killed by two gunmen. Unfortunately for Booth, while he did replicate the wound, it turns out that the second hole was an entry wound, invalidating the test anyways. It's also noted that Booth is a world class sniper while Oswald was not (he was a marksman in the marines but not on Booth's level).
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Hacker charges in with a full FBI squad saying this is now under FBI jurisdiction... eight seconds after Booth disables The Men in Black holding them hostage.
  • Groin Attack: Booth to one of Mr. White's agents.
    Booth: Good, old, American classic.
  • Heroic BSoD: Booth nearly has one when it's implied that there were two assassins involved in JFK's death and there was a government cover-up to hide this. Given the number of people he's killed for his country, he sees it as a huge betrayal.
  • John F. Kennedy: Brennan's team suspects, but can't ever be sure, that the skeleton the Secret Service conscripted them to analyze with state-of-the-art forensic methods was him.
  • Pregnancy Scare: Cam panics when she finds a positive pregnancy test in the lab's bathroom, thinking that maybe her teenage daughter had used it. She interrogates Brennan—not guilty—and realizes that it was Angela's. Who got a false positive, naturally.
  • Pregnancy Test Plot: As said above, Cam finds a positive test in the lab bathroom and thinks it’s her daughter Michelle’s. It’s actually Angela’s false positive.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Hacker is fully supportive of Booth's efforts to undermine whatever the Secret Service is doing, though he doesn't hesitate to snark about it.
  • Secret Test of Character: What Sweets thinks is happening to the team.
  • Techno Babble: Invoked by Booth where part of his plan involves Bones burying the Secret Service agent holding the team in lockdown under technical jargon so he will let them perform a questionable experiment. Bones doesn't disappoint.
  • Who Shot JFK?: The episode is built around (possibly) answering this question.
