Recap / Bones S 2 E 17 The Priest In The Churchyard

Go To

A graveyard has been uppended by a small flood due to a leaking pipe, and in identifying the remains for reburial, Zack and Brennan find that one of the bodies was likely a recent murder victim. They find he was poisoned with yew extract, and that a currently living Priest shows symptoms of the same kind of poisoning.

Tropes:

  • Dark Humor: Brennan thinks Booth shouldn't be upset at her atheism; he should just be satisfied that she'll burn in Hell if she's wrong. Booth replies that it's tempting.
  • Godwin's Law: When Booth argues that a relationship problem is a problem between two people, not just one, Bones points out that Hitler did pretty well on his own.
  • Hypocrite: Bones thinks a Priest is this when he criticizes her pride, but does nothing to contain his own.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: The murder victim, as well as a younger Priest, both took too much interest in the Parrish boys for Lorraine. The boys in question are adamant that the Priests were just father figures and never did anything inappropriate and nothing in the episode contradicts them.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Father Donovan is an old-fashioned man, but as soon as he sees the truth of the situation, he tries to take the fall to spare the real murderer, and is quickly convinced to hand her over to the FBI. When he confronts her, Donovan admits that his problem with Father Matt wasn't because Matt's a pedophile or differences in leadership styles, but because Matt was sent to replace him and it hurt his ego.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shout-Out to Shakespeare: Brennan says that Booth likes to paraphrase "Hamlet" at her.
Brennan: (to British Dr. Wyatt) He says: "There is more between Heaven and Earth, Bones, than is dreamt of in your science". That's a bastardization of a line from a play by Shakespeare, who is a famous poet...
    • The episode also ends with dueling quotes between Wyatt and Angela.
