• Blind Musician: Fran's piano tutor Josef and his father and grandfather.
• Cannot Talk to Women: Bernard. Collapses into a ball of self-doubt when thinking of talking to the girl he likes.
• "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Fran and Bernard pretend they can play the piano, forcing Manny to hide inside the instrument with a pair of spoons and actually 'play' while they sit at the keyboard and pretend.
• Glasses Pull: Done by Manny to reveal his black eye to Bernard.
• Hangover Sensitivity: Bernard and Fran after another night out at the pub. Wearing sunglasses, groaning and complaining as Manny slams the door and bangs on the piano keyboard.
• Hidden Depths: Inverted with Bernard. Fran and Manny make Bernard look like a Renaissance Man who can paint, play piano and speak several languages when in fact he cannot do any of them. Played straight with Manny who never learned piano but can play anyway.
• Hideous Hangover Cure: Somewhat averted as Bernard's cure looks like a little chocolate dessert complete with Flake. Played straight in the deleted scene immediately before, where we see what goes into it. This includes a cheeseburger, fries, a cup of coffee and a chocolate ice cream (including the wooden stick).
• Stern Teacher: Josef is strict but is delighted that Fran can supposedly play Bach.
• We Need a Distraction: Bernard distracts his girl with books of birds while Manny climbs inside the piano.
