Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who CCS 3 E 8 The Prisoners Dilemma

Go To

Ace is being jailed by a gigantic robot, demanding a lawyer. As she surrenders to her fate (temporarily) she meets a cellmate, and together the endeavour to escape.

But her true nature could very well lead Ace to her death.

  • Batman Gambit: Everything goes according to the Doctor's plans, even with Ace's memories wiped, because he knew how she'd act.
    • The Doctor also knows he doesn't need to be concerned about Zara, as her future happened two regenerations ago for him.
  • Call-Back: Ace mentions she once met "A bloke made out of liqourice". She also namedrops Florana being a lovely place and The Eye of Orion.
  • Cold Open: Starts out in a prison with Ace shouting she wants her lawyer and that she has to be treated nicely 'cause she's a girl.
  • The Empath: The girl from the prison.
  • Everybody Lives
  • Generation Planet: The Prison planet has been abandoned by the people who made them, but the prisoners' descendants are still living on it, but have to listen to the Prison robots.
  • Have We Met Yet?: The Doctor and Ace meet Harmonious 14 Zink and his wife before the Fifth incarnation does.
  • I Know You Know I Know:
Ace: They think that I think that they are Disciples of Chaos.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The Prison Robots can wipe the prisoners' memories. Both Zara and Ace are subjected to it.
    • It also came in handy from the writers' point of view, as they would later imply inconsistencies in Ace's history between Virgin and Big Finish were because of her amnesia in this episode. This is a rare case of Big Finish featuring Ace from the Virgin (Doctor/Ace/Benny) era.
  • Logic Bomb: Ace tries to employ a minor one to prevent the Prison robots from wiping her memories. She's tried to escape, but she's not in the system. Ergo, they need her memories so that they can find out why she's not in the system.
  • Narrator: Towards the end of the Cold Open the prisoner starts narrating and she starts giving her backstory. Ace takes over in the second part.
  • Outlaw Couple: Zink and his wife. But they're only petty criminals.
  • P.O.V. Sequel: A lot of the Judgement of Isskar is narrated from Zara's perspective.
  • Series Continuity Error: Ace recalls a memory from Happy Endings, but this happened after Ace had left the Doctor in the Virgin continuity and grown up, whereas the cover depicts a teenage Ace.
