Recap / Batman Wayne Family Adventures Episode 108 There Can Be Only One

Go To

Roy Harper takes his daughter Lian to the carnival. She insists on inviting her two favorite uncles, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Now there's just one problem...who's the favorite uncle?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: Lian invited both Dick and Jason because she knew that they'd compete over who's the "favorite" uncle and spoil her rotten trying to outdo each other.
  • Big Ball of Violence: As Roy and Lian drive away, Jason and Dick are fighting in a cloud of dust over whether Lian is going to join the Outlaws or the Teen Titans when she grows up.
  • Blatant Lies: Dick and Jason both keep insisting that they are definitely not competing over whom Lian likes more... definitely not.
  • Continuity Nod: Again, a plushie of bunny Nightwing with escrima sticks can be found in the ring toss booth.
  • Face Palm: Roy ultimately tells Dick and Jason that Lian played them. Even afterwards, Dick and Jason are still fighting over whom Lian likes more. Roy shoves his face into his hand.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Lian gets so many stuffies at the carnival that Roy can barely fit them all in the car.
  • Honorary Uncle: Neither Jason nor Dick is related to Roy, but they're close friends, so they're still regarded as uncles to Lian, despite the lack of biological ties.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: A day at the fair with Jason's best friend's daughter turns into a competition fast when Dick shows up as well and they try to see who's the favorite uncle.
  • Mythology Gag: Dick tells Lian that he had an elephant friend in the circus.
  • Shout-Out: The title refers to the tagline of the movie Highlander, in which Immortals must duel each other until only one remains. Dick and Jason's competition is a non-deadly version.
  • So Proud of You: Roy admits that he's impressed at how Lian played her two uncles like a drum to get a crap-ton of stuffed animals and fairground food.
  • "Test Your Strength" Game: When Lian expresses interest in a monkey prize for a high-striker, Jason grabs the hammer before Dick can and immediately bashes the target hard enough to ring the bell.
  • Through His Stomach: Downplayed; among the many things Jason gets Lian is a cotton candy stick. Dick immediately asks her father if there's another type of food she might want.
  • Twinkle in the Eye: When Roy reveals that Lian had been playing Dick and Jason off of each other, his daughter's eyes gleam wickedly over the edge of the car window.
  • Unseen No More: After being referred to back when Damian was trying to make a friend, Roy finally appears.
  • Win Her a Prize: Jason and Dick win all kinds of prizes for Lian to show off, not needing more than one try each time. The twist is that they're doing this as uncles for a young girl, not as boyfriends trying to impress a girlfriend.
