Michael and Amy are enjoying a summer day in their backyard, excited about going to the beach the next day. Their friends show up one by one to join in the fun. Unfortunately, the plans are cancelled as their dad has to work over the weekend. Things seem bleak, until Barney comes to life. Aside from Michael and Amy, the gang is stunned to see a six-foot T. rex standing before them, but soon see that this dinosaur is a friend to all children. Using their imaginations, Barney and the Backyard Gang magically fly to the beach. They find seashells, have a seaside picnic and explore an abandoned pirate ship. They even go under the sea to visit with Barney's friend Molly the Mermaid. With the day coming to an end, they return home safely.

- Sandy Duncan is the one singing "I Love You" here, rather than Barney and/or the kids.

- Gentle Giant: Four-year-old Tina seems to be afraid of Barney when she first meets him, until he offers to give her a hug, which she accepts.
- Our Mermaids Are Different: Molly the Mermaid
- Pilot Episode: Along with "Three Wishes" and "The Backyard Show," this is the pilot to the whole Barney franchise, introducing the gang and the titular purple dinosaur. This video fits the trope even moreso, as most of the Backyard Gang meet Barney for the first time.
- Tagalong Kid: Luci is annoyed that Tina follows her around, until Michael and Amy’s mom says that that’s because she (Tina) is so proud of her big sister.
