Recap / Arknights A Death In Chunfen

Go To

A swordswoman of the jianghu comes to the village of Moushan in the far reaches of Yan so a boy may come home, only to discover a plot has been set in motion before the two came home.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The village gets the cash from subsidies and compensation money to make up for their poor harvest and turn their lives around, but the Elder and Xiaoshi's father have to live with the guilt of the actions they took out of desperation to improve their community's lives. Fang Xiaoshi lives, but is considered forever dead to his hometown due to his refusal to accept their mandate and has to begin a new life. Wind Chimes has survivor's guilt over the nameless cameraman's death and takes it upon herself to start documenting the rural lives of Yanese to make it up for him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Saga appears in an event story for the first time since "Who is Real".
  • Call-Back:
    • The story immediately follows up on where Qiubai was last seen, hunting Shanhaizhong stragglers after the failed assault on Yumen.
    • Saga recalls her visions of her alternate selves from Dusk's painting, making a point to compare her gambler self to what the Elder has done.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The title refers to the two different deaths during the Chinese Spring Equinox. The first is the nameless cameraman who physically dies to the Elder's mudslide while the other is Xiaoshi who becomes legally dead to the village and the government to substitute for the nameless man's identity.
  • No Name Given: Invoked. The nameless cameraman explicitly never gave his name to anyone nor did he manage to keep any ID on him, much to Wind Chimes' grief as she now has very little means to look for his identity and name to notify his family of his death.
  • Rule of Three: Qiubai makes a point that she saved Xiaoshi's life three times during the course of their time seen together.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: It turns out the insurance scam was entirely unnecessary as had they not delayed Wind Chimes' arrival to the town, they simply would have received the government grants they had long since given up hope on for years the same week they were hatching a scheme to make money.
