Recap / Archie Bunkers Place S 3 E 8 Growing Up Is Hard To Do

Go To

It's Stephanie's 13th birthday, and because she's Jewish, it's now time for the new teenager to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah. Archie's longstanding discomfort for Jewish people, however, takes a back seat to one of the (uninvited) guests ... Edith's cousin, Floyd. He's back one last time, in a last-ditch effort to reconcile with Stephanie and ask her to come home. And the only way he'll go away is if he gets more money. How will Archie get rid of the late Dingbat's chronically drunk cousin this time ... or will there be an unexpected heroine?

Tropes associated with this story:

  • Coming of Age Story: Stephanie's Bat Mitzvah turns into this in more ways than one. In realizing her father is (likely) always going to be who he is, she gives Floyd all the money she was given as a gift. Archie and Billie console Stephanie in the final scene, admitting she did a courageous thing by cutting her father out of her life once and for all, but not before wishing him well and hoping one day he will get sober and can be part of her life again.
