Detective Joe Furuya gets pulled back into the life of an Anime Crimes Division Detective when an old friend is found murdered...
"ACD_AMV.wmv" provides examples of:
- Black Market: In Neo Otaku City, pirating anime is treated like Serious Business (or at least more-so than everywhere else), AMV Alley a Red Light District where original content (like AMVs and fanfics) and internet-piracy are rampant.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Joe was once a regular AMV maker (which in Neo Otaku City treats like drug-dealing) before he became a cop.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: While internet-piracy is illegal everywhere, here it is treated not unlike drug-dealing and drug-using.
- Sasuke's grandmother is infected with malware from piracy (not unlike catching a disease for needle-sharing in drug-use) and the symptoms (how she is slower and gets confused) sounds similar to dementia.
- Foreshadowing: When they arrest Sasuke, the transition card looks similar to an animation from Death Note. In the following scene, Sasuke dies similar to how one dies when their name is in the titular Death Note (by a convenient heart-attack).
- Take That!: Evanescence is regularly used by the denizens of AMV Alley and can become an Ear Worm if they aren't careful, Joe having used "Wake Me Up" during his own AMV days, a reference to their close association with the anime community by way of Wolverine Publicity.
- Too Dumb to Live: To show just how out of their depth the rest of ACD is without Joe, Detective Murphy theorizes that Hideki shot himself in the head and then ate the gun to hide the evidence. He then put his own gun into his mouth and would probably have intentionally shot himself if Joe didn't show up. Chief Brody even points out how it's "completely against regulations."
