Recap / All In The Family S 3 E 4 Gloria And The Riddle

Go To

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • God and Satan Are Both Jerks: At one point, Gloria and Tammy call Archie on using the Bible to defend his stance on how he views women's roles by saying even the Bible — using biblical teachings that were still accepted by many at the time — has many instances where women have inferior, lower roles than men.
  • Moral Myopia: Of the many episodes that played on this trope, one that did it outstandingly well. Mike chides Archie for his male chauvinist, but then as he's unable to solve the riddle or even make a reasonable guess, begins to realize he's not really that much different than Archie.
  • Riddle of the Sphinx: A form of this is posed by Gloria. Archie and Mike are stumped, but Edith easily deduces the answer ... more or less proving Tammy's point about men's attitudes toward and about women.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Both Gloria and Tammy prove that Archie and Mike both have these attitudes: That women, in the very least, are beneath men and not as capable as they are ... and at worst, that they literally belong as stay-at-home housewives.
