Tropes featured in this episode of Alan Wake:

  • Face–Heel Turn: By the time Alan makes it to Diver's Isle, the vision of Barry he met in the last episode becomes a Taken, going from being a Helpful Hallucination to the Final Boss.
  • Sequel Hook: Player Character Alan reunites with TV Alan. His sanity restored, he sits at the typewriter and begins writing his sequel to DepartureReturn — with the intent on using it to free himself from the Dark Place.
  • Split at Birth: It is revealed that the Alan controlled by the player and TV Alan that has been antagonizing him are both the real Alan, having been separated after his prolonged stay in the Dark Place; TV Alan is the part of Alan who has suffered a mental breakdown due to his imprisonment and the Alan the player has been playing being what remains of his sanity, the various obstacles trying to keep them apart are a result the Dark Presence trying to keep Alan in the dark.
