Howard Hughes: They chased it to an airstrip in the valley. There was a wreck on the runway. The X-3 was destroyed.
General 1: Well, better lost than in the wrong hands. How soon can you rebuild it?
Hughes: Rebuild it? Not a chance.
General 1: My people in Washington will have something to say about that.
Hughes: Your people in Washington want to turn anything that flies into a weapon. Apparently, somebody else had the same thought.
General 2: I'm afraid we must insist.
Hughes: I don't work for the government. I cooperate at my own discretion. Two of my best pilots were killed during the test phase. God knows how many more men would have died if it had flown. No, gentlemen. I'm sorry I ever dreamed the damn thing up.
General 1: Sir, I wish you'd reconsider. What do we tell the president?
Hughes: Tell him the dream's over. Tell him Howard Hughes said so.

"Forgive me, Mr. President, but I am a man of science, not of war! I intended the Giant Death Ray to be used for good, not evil! To help mankind, not to destroy it!"
Professor Death, That Mitchell and Webb Look

Edward: My invention beams any TV signal directly into the human brain. By stimulating the neurons, manipulating brainwaves if you will, this device makes the viewer feel like they're actually inside the show! Why be brutalized by an uncaring world?
Bruce: Did you say manipulating brainwaves?
Edward: Well, uh... yes. Not that someone like you would need this. Someone so... sophisticated... and intelligent. I just need additional funds and time for human testing. Let me show you, please!
Bruce: Now look, Ed. I'm going to need a full set of technical schematics on this, all right?
Edward: I want you to know we're gonna be full partners on this, Bruce! Look at us! Two of a kind!
Bruce: You call my assistant Margaret. She'll set something up.
Edward: Uhhhhhh... that's not gonna be good for me. I need an answer now. I think I deserve it.
Bruce: I'm sorry, Ed, then the answer's no. Stimulating neurons... tampering with people's brainwaves... it just raises too many questions.

Vandham: Rex, you're a salvager, ain't ya?
Rex: Yeah.
Vandham: You musta fished out your share of military supplies, right? You fine with that?
Rex: Nah. I don't wanna get involved in it.
Vandham: It's all the same. Compasses, valves for ether stoves... Armies need all these things. That bread you're eating? It's made from ruska flour. Supplied by the Ardanian government. This world's full of war. Don't matter if you're a soldier or not. As long as you're alive... you're in the war, some way or another.
