Playing With / Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is very annoyed at being woken up too early in the morning/late in the night.

  • Straight:
    • Bob enters Alice's room and wakes her up. She berates him for bothering her at 4 in the morning.
    • Bob calls Alice at 4 in the morning. Alice curses under her breath while reaching for her phone.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice is so furious she violently thrashes away at Bob for waking her up early.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice is only mildly annoyed and complains to Bob, but maintains a composed attitude.
    • Despite being very angry, Alice holds back and simply politely tells Bob that it's uncalled for to wake people up so early.
  • Justified:
    • For the one being woken up:
      • Alice has to go to work early, and Bob's interruption will cost her valuable sleep time.
      • Alice has been having an awful week, and being woken up too early is simply the last straw.
    • For the one doing the waking up:
      • Bob lacks the common sense to know when not to wake up people.
      • Bob is a Troll. He just wanted to get a laugh out of pestering Alice like this.
      • Bob is calling from a different time zone where it's already 10 in the morning, and forgot that for Alice it's not even sunrise yet.
      • It's an emergency. If they wait until dawn to act, it will be too late.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is nocturnal, and gets angry when Alice wakes him up at 4 in the afternoon.
    • Alice was having a nightmare, and is actually thankful that Bob woke her up.
    • Bob has an urgent problem, and is upset that he has to wake up Alice at 4 in the morning.
    • Bob has a problem early in the morning that he only succeeds in making even worse. When Alice finds out after getting up at dawn, she gets upset at Bob for not waking her up as soon as the problem started. This may only make things worse if Bob didn't wake her up out of fear that she would get upset at him (in which he might be right).
  • Subverted: Alice seems angry at first, but she turns out to be in a decent mood despite Bob's interruption.
  • Double Subverted: Then Bob explains why he woke her up, and she gets angry for real that he'd bother her for something so insignificant.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob wakes up Alice in the middle of the night. When she starts to protest, Bob points out that she had only been asleep for about five minutes.
    • Bob wakes up Alice too early in the morning, and she berates him... but this wakes up Carol, who starts yelling at her, in turn waking up Dave, who complains to Carol, which then wakes up Elise, who berates Dave... this continues until the whole neighborhood is awake and disgruntled, and by the time Bob gets a chance to talk, he already forgot what he even woke up Alice for.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Characters never show any emotional response to being woken up at inconvenient hours.
    • No one is woken up early in the morning or late in the night.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Goddammit Bob, it's 4 in the morning!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Carol stops Bob from entering Alice's room.
    • Carol stops Bob from calling Alice.
  • Discussed: "How annyoing can Bob be?" "That's nothing. He once woke me up at 4 in the morning for no good reason".
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: ???
  • Deconstructed: Alice is so drowsy she proves unable to help Bob with his problem.
  • Reconstructed: But her attempts still help Bob figure out what he needs to do, and he goes on to solve the problem on his own.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice delivers a Slapstick beatdown upon Bob for waking her up.
  • Played for Drama: Alice's anger causes her to get into an argument with Bob that ends up damaging their friendship.
  • Played for Horror: Bob wakes up Alice early in the morning, not knowing she's a werewolf. Now that she's awake, and is in a trance due to her transformation, she proceeds to terrorize the neighborhood until dawn.

*sigh* What is it at this hour? Go back to Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour? Couldn't you have waited until sunrise to tell me that?!
