Playing With / Token Minority

Go To

Basic Trope: Any minority character is the only member of that minority group to exist in the story.

  • Straight: Bob is the only Black character in Tales of Tropeville.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • There's only one member of each minority group in their community because whoever is letting people into the community is a bigot, and just has to fill a quota.
    • Bob is The Whitest Black Guy which makes him have a hard time fitting in with other black people, so he manages to befriend a group of white people instead.
    • The show is set in a nation or area that's quite homogenous, so there are not so many minorities living in this town.
  • Inverted: Everyone is a minority, except the one able-bodied, gender-conforming, cishet, Token White man.
  • Subverted: Alice meets Bob, and assumes he's the only Black person around, until she meets the rest of the cast, which is very diverse.
  • Double Subverted: Alice meets Bob, who is Black. She assumes Bob is the only Black person around, which causes the other characters to judge her for assuming Tropeville lacks diversity. Then Alice meets the rest of the community, and the twist is Bob really is the only minority, and Tropeville really does lack diversity.
  • Parodied: Tropeville is made up of one person from every minority group; its real name is 'Tokenville' but the town is Only Known by Their Nickname.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob is the only minority in Tropeville, except it turns out he was actually lying, and he isn't a minority. But so was everyone else, they're all actually minorities!
  • Averted:
  • Lampshaded: "So you're like, the token Black guy at this place, huh?"
  • Defied: Bob doesn't want to join the community, because he doesn't want to be the only minority member.
  • Enforced: The show was getting backlash for not being diverse, so they added a minority character to try and prove they are.
  • Discussed: "The real world isn't like TV, more than one Black guy can exist within a 10 miles radius of each other."
  • Conversed: "I hate how every TV show seems to have just one token Black character."
  • Implied:
    • Alice lists her friends: Wendy, Carla, John, and Tsubaki.
    • Bob is the only Ambiguously Brown character in Tales of Tropeville.
    • Bob's accent is quite different from rest of the cast, but his heritage is remain unknown.
    • Everyone in the cast has Anglo-Saxon surnames, Bob is the only one who has Italian-sounding surname.
  • Deconstructed: Bob is the only minority in the community, and he ends up leaving due to the insensitivity and discrimination of everyone around him.
  • Reconstructed: Following what happens in Deconstructed, this causes the rest of the cast to realize their mistake, apologize, and work to do better, causing Bob to return to the community.
  • Played For Drama: The focus of Tales of Tropeville is Bob dealing with the pressure of being the token Black guy of the community.
  • Played For Horror: There's only one member of that minority group in the community because the rest have been killed by a bigoted serial killer.
