Basic Trope: Tyrannosaurids portrayed as terrifyingly powerful, whether accurate or inaccurate.

  • Straight: The protagonists are chased by a Tyrannosaurus rex that ruthlessly hunts them.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • The T. rex is still terrifying, but it doesn’t appear too often.
    • The T. rex is a sympathetic protagonist or even a hero but is consistently shown to be a feared apex predator.
  • Justified:
    • The T. rex is desperate for a meal and decides that humans will be a good appetizer.
    • The T. rex is exceptionally territorial, protecting its nest or children, or hunting for its children’s food.
    • Someone was stupid enough to attack the T. rex, and it reacts exactly as a pissed-off animal would.
  • Inverted: The T. rex is scared of humans. May develop into Humans Are the Real Monsters.
  • Subverted: The T. rex is shown to be placid and merely minding its own business...
  • Double Subverted: ...until it sees something of interest whereupon it starts acting violently.
  • Parodied: Rex the Tyrannosaurus boasts at length of his viciousness, but he's never seen doing anything more violent than engaging in various petty acts of Poke the Poodle villainy.
  • Zig-Zagged: Several individual tyrannosaurs appear. A few of them menace the protagonists, but others ignore them or are even curious and friendly.
  • Averted:
    • There is no Tyrannosaurid.
    • If there is one, it isn’t portrayed as a threat.
  • Enforced: The work prominently features a Tyrannosaurus in an antagonistic role, so its design and behaviour were deliberately made to be as scary as possible in order to come across as menacing to the protagonists.
  • Lampshaded: "As it turns out, T. rex is every bit as scary as I always imagined."
  • Invoked: The T. rex is actually an animatronic built by the Big Bad.
  • Exploited: A live Tyrannosaurus is captured and exhibited in a horror attraction for the purpose of scaring visitors.
  • Defied: The "T. Rex" protagonist is fully aware that they are terrifying in battle. But outside of it, they do their best to break the negative stereotypes towards their species thru their display of good deeds and friendly attitude toward others.
  • Deconstructed: In a world of anthropomorphic dinosaurs, the fearsome reputation of tyrannosaurids leads to other dinosaurs having an unfair attitude of Fantastic Racism towards them...
  • Reconstructed: ...but a successful campaign by tyrannosaurid activists leads to a widespread shift in public opinion, with many dinosaurs coming to recognize the reality that most tyrannosaurs aren't actually so bad.
  • Discussed: "It's a T. rex, Bob. Of course it's trying to kill us!"
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Distant T. rex roars are heard off-screen, but the cause of such never makes a physical appearance.
  • Played for Laughs: ???
  • Played for Drama: ???
  • Played for Horror: ???
