Basic Trope: Fictional cephalopods portrayed as sneaky, stealthy creatures, often making use of camouflage and other natural abilities of real cephalopods.

  • Straight: Otto the octopus is a professional spy and master of disguise in the ocean world.
  • Exaggerated: Otto sneaks up on humans at the beach and stabs them in the back just to prove that he can.
  • Downplayed: Otto the octopus doesn't normally depend on stealth, but he does manage to hide from his enemies successfully on one occasion.
  • Justified: Truth in Television, cephalopods are very stealthy.
  • Inverted:
    • Otto is a giant brute who makes no attempts at stealth, instead preferring to fight head-on.
    • Otto is incredibly talkative and boisterous, so much so that the heroes can never get him to shut up when they're trying to be stealthy.
  • Subverted: The heroes begin searching for Otto, only to realize he's standing right behind them in broad daylight.
  • Double Subverted: The "Otto" they found is only a dummy that the real Otto set up to trick them.
  • Parodied: Otto is a Funny Octopus who only thinks he's being stealthy, when everyone can clearly see him.
  • Zig-Zagged: Otto hides from some enemies and fights others head-on, whichever tactic is more logical at the moment.
  • Averted: Otto does not use stealth. There are simply no events in his story that would require it.
  • Enforced: The creators need a stealthy character, and cephalopods just happen to have those abilities in real life, so it works out.
  • Lampshaded: "Octopuses are slippery like that."
  • Invoked: Otto is a human spy who uses "Octopus" as his codename.
  • Exploited: Fred the fish needs someone to do espionage, so he asks the only octopus he knows, Otto.
  • Defied: Otto refuses to use espionage because he considers it cowardly.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: Otto the octopus uses his skills to troll someone, who has no idea that an octopus is doing these things.
  • Played for Drama: Otto is a shy, awkward creature who uses his stealth to hide from people. He is very lonely.
  • Played for Horror: Otto the octopus is a Slasher-like monster, using his abilities to stalk and kill a group of innocents trapped in an aquarium with him.
  • Deconstructed: ???
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Implied: Something sneaks past the hero. When the hero looks, there are nothing but sucker marks left behind.
