Basic Trope: A competition that involves spelling words, often as a plot.

  • Straight: An episode of "Bob and Friends", the titular character and his friends in Troper Elementary School compete to spell words.
  • Exaggerated: The competition involves spelling every word in the English language, including ones that are very long and hard to spell.
  • Downplayed: Instead of a spelling bee, it's more of a spelling test.
  • Justified: Truth in Television at some schools, but not as common in real life as it is in fiction.
