Basic Trope Description: Healthcare and medicine aren't available any longer in a post-apocalyptic setting.

  • Straight: After The Plague hits, there is no healthcare available to the survivors, leading to things like Bob having to learn to get along without glasses after breaking them and Alice dying because she cannot get any insulin for her diabetes.
  • Exaggerated: After The Plague, there is just no more professional healthcare, but also all layman medical knowledge that could exist in any survivor's head just seems to have disappeared.
  • Downplayed: Smaller injuries like a broken finger and lighter diseases like the common cold are still well curable, but everything else...not so much.
  • Justified: Nearly all doctors have caught The Plague themselves and died while trying to treat the infected.
  • Inverted: The Virus somehow turned all survivors into medical geniuses, so there are plenty of healthcare options more available in comparison to before.
  • Subverted: Our heroes scavenge through the world and have to try to survive without anyone helping them when they are sick. But in a moment when Alice is already in a diabetic coma and Bob using a stick to find his way, they find a still-functioning hospital.
  • Double Subverted: This turns out to be All Just a Dream.
  • Enforced: The makers of the show think that this would be realistic.
  • Averted: Cozy Catastrophe
  • Zig-Zagged: Here and then, the healthcare system still works, but it is really just "here and then".
  • Invoked: The military bombs all kinds of healthcare facilities since they became not much more than the main spreading points for The Plague. They just don't care what becomes of the survivors.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz uses the situation for propaganda and lures people on his side by promising them the healthcare system back.
  • Defied: Some surviving doctors and nurses set up their own emergency healthcare center to give people still an option to get treatment.
  • Lampshaded: "Sorry Alice, this is the apocalypse. We will find no insulin. Better prepare to die."
  • Discussed: "We can't hope to get him into hospital." "Well, seems like we have to try operating on him ourselves..."
  • Conversed: "Scary, isn't it? That makes you thankful for what you have."
  • Deconstructed: Hospitals and medical facilities are kept running the longest by governmental plans. And there are also still plenty of options from traditional and layman medicine, that may not be as good as modern medicine, but also work in some way.
  • Reconstructed: But this is not forever. And Self-Surgery and layman medicine just aren't as good as real modern medicine.
  • Played for Drama: Some of The Immune have survived The Plague only to be brought into danger by their individual bodily weaknesses that weren't real weaknesses thanks to modern medicine before.
  • Implied: Before The Plague, Alice was always quite fine thanks to her insulin pump, but soon after The Plague hits, her health starts to deteriorate from diabetes and nobody can help her.
