Go To

Basic Trope: Someone in an extravagant outfit is mistaken for a clown or similar performer.

  • Straight: Chris is trying on a new colorful suit, and Debra asks if he's a clown.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Chris's outfit is just slightly more colorful/extravagant than usual, and Debra still insists he's a clown for some reason.
    • Debra even asks him to entertain at her child's birthday party.
  • Downplayed: Chris is asked if he's a clown, but he's actually wearing a mime outfit.
  • Justified: Debra doesn't know why else someone would wear an outfit like that.
  • Inverted: Chris actually is trying to dress as a clown, but Debra doesn't think he looks like one.
  • Subverted: Debra asks Chris to put on a show ... by which he means to do something to grab people's attention.
  • Double Subverted: Like a clown would do.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody mistakes anyone for a clown.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Chris outright says that he isn't a clown.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Does 'colourful' just mean 'clown' to these guys?"
  • Played for Drama
    • Chris is hurt that his fashion sense, which he puts lot of effort into, is reduced to a joke.
    • Chris is attacked by someone who hates clowns.
