Basic Trope: The lights go off in a room, and when they turn back on, someone has died.

  • Straight: In the Mansion of Troperia, the lights suddenly go out when everyone is having dinner... and when they go back on, everyone finds that Von Trope has been murdered!
  • Exaggerated: When the lights turn on again, everyone in the room has been killed.
  • Downplayed:
    • When the lights turn on, it's revealed that Von Trope is missing/injured.
    • When the lights turn on, it's revealed that something was stolen.
  • Justified: The murderer wanted it to be difficult to identify them, so they turned off the lights in order to hide this.
  • Inverted:
    • For some reason, the murderer waits until the lights have turned back on to commit the act.
    • The scene is filled with dead bodies. Suddenly lights go off and when they turn back one, one of the bodies is alive.
  • Subverted: Von Trope seems dead, but is actually just resting.
  • Double Subverted: Then the lights go off, and Duke Bob is killed.
  • Parodied: The murderer ends up stumbling around in the dark and fails horribly at the act.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: The murderer doesn't kill anyone in the dark.
  • Enforced: No lights means no visual effects needed, which means less budget needed for the scene.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: The mastermind of a Deadly Game turns out the lights until a murder is committed, in a bid to get people killing each other as quickly as possible.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
