Basic Trope: Someone is stated to be Jewish, but doesn't actually show any signs of being Jewish.

  • Straight: David is stated to be Jewish, but despite this, he is often shown eating pork.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • David is Jewish, but there is an offhand mention that he enjoys bacon in one scene.
    • Judaism is mostly portrayed accurately, but some Artistic License – Religion pops up from time to time.
    • David is a Judaist, but he is more of a Nay-Theist who doesn't follow Jewish events often.
  • Justified:
    • David is ethnically Jewish, but doesn't follow Judaism.
    • David follows a much less strict version of Judaism (ie. Reform Judaism).
  • Inverted: David is Ambiguously Jewish. It's never stated that he is, but follows several Jewish customs.
  • Subverted: David is stated to be Jewish, but he is then seen eating pork. Alice questions this, but then David admits that he was only pretending to be Jewish to get out of having to work on Saturday.
  • Double Subverted: ...But then David attends a synagogue, proving that he was actually lying about not being Jewish.
  • Parodied:
    • Other characters insist that David isn't actually Jewish because he isn't stereotypical enough.
    • David seems to abide by Judaism in every way... except for keeping kosher (he's only ever seen eating non-kosher food, such as pork, shellfish, alligator meat...)
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Any Jewish characters (if any) in the work will be portrayed accurately.
  • Enforced: Artistic License – Religion
  • Lampshaded: "Uh... I'm pretty sure that isn't kosher."
  • Invoked: David willingly violates kosher laws so that anti-Semitics in his town don't think he's Jewish.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob is very strict and open about his Judaism, following it to the letter and bringing it up at any opportunity.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Hey— isn't that character meant to be Jewish? Why's he eating pork?!"
  • Deconstructed: Judith, who is a more orthodox Judaist, accuses David of lying about being Jewish because he was seen eating and enjoying pork.
  • Played for Drama: David comes from a Jewish background, but ordinarily he considers himself a secular Jew, if not an outright atheist. During a time of distress, however, he attempts to seek comfort in seeking out his Jewish roots, and has to deal with the fact that more Orthodox Jews don't consider him "not Jewish enough" for them.
