Basic Trope: A character is assaulted or killed for their presumed sexuality or gender identity.

  • Straight: Bob is a gay character who is beat up by Charlie for being gay.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every gay character is beaten, tortured, or killed for being gay.
    • The government of Troperia commits genocide on all gay people in the country.
  • Downplayed: Bob is a gay character who is jeered at and mocked by bullies for being gay.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is a straight character who is beat up for being straight.
    • Bob is gay and all sorts of good things happen to him after he embraces that fact.
  • Subverted: Bob is gay and gets beat up, but it later turns out that he was attacked for reasons unrelated to his sexual orientation.
  • Double Subverted: Charlie may have beaten Bob up for not paying money he was owed, but Dennis only told Charlie where Bob was hiding and loaned him the baseball bat because he hates Bob for being gay and for whatever reason wouldn't attack Bob himself.
  • Parodied: Bob is a gay character who, as soon as he comes out of the closet, is plagued by a slew of hate crimes. He only survives because he'd already been established to be an Iron Butt Monkey.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob is alternately treated badly, put on a pedestal, and treated like anybody else.
  • Averted: Bob is gay, but no one ever attacks or bullies him for the fact.
  • Enforced: The work shall contain an anti-homophobia aesop.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Denise, who wants to harm Bob, tells Charlie, a known violent homophobe, about Bob's sexuality in the hopes of Bob becoming Charlie's next victim.
  • Exploited: When Bob and his boyfriend walk into Gregory's antique shop, he talks them into buying an antique weapon by pointing out that people like Bob are often targeted in this city and that a method of defense would be advisable.
  • Defied: Bob is gay and no one ever thinks negatively of him for it. He lives happily and out, with no homophobic backlash whatsoever.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Sadly still a reality for many queer people out there."
  • Implied: After coming out of the closet, Bob is frequently seen sad and with fresh wounds and scars.
  • Played for Laughs:
