Basic Trope: If you see a character facing a wall, watch out.
- Straight: Alice walks into a room, sees Bob standing with his face to the wall and calls him. He turns around to reveal he's Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Exaggerated: If a person is ever facing the wall when someone else walks into the room, even for a second, they have something wrong with them.
- Downplayed: Alice walks into a room, sees Bob standing with his face to the wall and calls him. He turns around to reveal signs he will soon succumb to brainwashing.
- Justified: Bob (or his handlers) want to scare Alice as soon as she sees him turned.
- Inverted:
- Bob hears Alice enter the room while he's standing with his face to a wall. He turns around to greet her, only to see that she's Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Alice walks into a room, sees Bob standing with his face to the wall, and calls him. Bob turns around to reveal that he has become superhuman.
- Subverted: Alice enters a room to find Bob standing with his face against the wall and calls him. He turns around, revealing himself to be Brainwashed and Crazy ... but when he recognizes her, it turns out he was only pretending the brainwashing worked to fake out the villains.
- Double Subverted: ...Or so he thought. Manchurian Agent conditioning kicks in shortly.
- Parodied: Bob turns his face to the wall a second before Alice comes in. She assumes he's Brainwashed and Crazy and fights to try to subdue him despite his protestations that he was just going to turn on a light.
- Zig-Zagged: Alice walks into a room, sees Bob standing with his face to the wall, and calls him. He turns around to reveal nothing is wrong with him; he was just looking at the wall. But Alice knows Bob never looks at that wall, so she's alerted that he's Brainwashed and Crazy. But he's fighting it internally.
- Averted: Whether people are facing a wall has nothing to do with their mental state.
- Enforced: ???
- Lampshaded:Alice [Thinking]: Maybe I shouldn't call him ... what if he turns around and he's one of them?
- Invoked: Brainwashed and Crazy Bob knows his face will give him away, so he places himself in a position where Alice won't see it until he's almost ready to attack.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: Alice comes in and finds Bob facing the wall. She turns around and walks out again.
