Basic Trope: Evil factions are eager to accept defectors into their ranks.

  • Straight: After years of fighting The Empire, Alice decides to switch allegiances and work for Empire instead. Emperor Evulz welcomes her into the imperial army, uncaring for Alice's history or the possibility of betrayal.
  • Exaggerated: Alice spent over a decade in the Resistance, causing immense trouble for the Empire. She personally wiped out most of its army, committed a genocide against imperial citizens and killed Evulz's whole family in hopes of breaking him mentally. As she lies dying on a battlefield, Alice proclaims that she changed her mind and wants to join the Empire. Evulz then spares her, cures her injuries and even makes Alice the general of his army.
  • Downplayed: After Alice offers to join Emperor Evulz, he sents her on a test to prove her loyalty. When Alice passess, Evulz warily accepts her into the ranks of the Empire.
  • Justified:
    • Empire has been low on manpower for a while now. The only way Evulz can keep his army sizeable is if he accepts defectors from other sides of the conflict, risky it may be.
    • Evulz uses Mind Control on his soldiers to keep them in line. There is no way any of them would betray him, so recruiting from the other side carries little risk.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: It turns out Evulz only agreed to hire Alice so that she would lower her guard. He then orders Alice executed both for her crimes against the Empire and her treacherous behavior.
  • Double Subverted: Evulz doesn't actually intend to kill Alice, he just doesn't want to anger his men who would want their former enemy dead. After performing a fake execution, he allows Alice to work as his advisor, under a different name of course.
  • Parodied: When Alice says she wants to join the Empire, Evulz immediately agrees to hire her and even throws a welcome party.
  • Zig-Zagged: Multiple Resistance members have tried to join the Empire. Some got accepted with open arms, while others got shot on sight or after they outlived their usefulness.
  • Averted:
    • The Empire does not accept defectors into their ranks.
    • Almost nobody in the entire war opts to switch sides.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Wait, are we really going to allow our bitter enemies get away with everything they've done just because they decided to work for us?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: After being admitted to the Empire, Alice acts as a spy for the Resistance, bringing the imperials ever closer to losing the war.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: As Alice betrayed the Resistance, she is all too happy to betray the Empire when it benefits her.
  • Reconstructed: Evulz anticipates her betrayal and executes her when she hatches her plan.
