Basic Trope: Justifying a self-description from a certain character's PoV by having them look in a mirror.

  • Straight: "Jack glanced into the bathroom mirror, and a dark-skinned man of 6'1" caught his eye."
  • Exaggerated: "As Jack looked through the bathroom mirror, back at him glanced Jackson Shrdlu, a highly decorated African-American Private Detective known for dealing with the crime-ridden streets of New York, standing tall at six foot one."
  • Downplayed: "Jack looked at the bathroom mirror and admired his upright posture."
  • Justified: Jack forgot what he looked like, realized he looked different than he did before, or something about his appearance is significantly important to the story.
  • Inverted: The First-Person Peripheral Narrator describes the main character as seen through the transparent side of a one-way mirror.
  • Subverted:
    • Jack describes who he sees in the mirror, and clarifies that it's someone standing behind him.
    • Jack is actually looking into a Magic Mirror which displays someone other than himself.
  • Double Subverted: Jack describes someone inside the mirror, but reveals that it's someone behind him. That someone is his identical twin brother, Jake.
  • Parodied: "Jack looked in the mirror and saw a man looking at a man in the mirror whose gaze was focused on the bathroom mirror, within which lied a man glancing into the mirror at a familiar figure who was viewing himself through a mirror."
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: "Jack looked at the bathroom mirror and noticed a peculiar stain on it."
  • Enforced: "Your book is too inaccessible for young readers who just want to know what the main character looks like. You know that scene where he's shaving? He could look into the mirror at that point and describe himself."
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: "Jack passed right by the bathroom mirror without turning its way. He'd been rather insecure of his appearance lately."
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???

"And his reflection showed the appearance of a man who would soon go back to Description in the Mirror."
