Basic Trope: A changing painting or photo gets Played for Horror.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are exploring a supposedly haunted house. Bob sees a painting on the wall develop a Slasher Smile after he turns his back for few minutes.
  • Exaggerated: Alice and Bob are exploring a supposedly haunted house. Bob sees a painting of a beautiful, innocent-looking young woman turn into a painting of a slavering monster.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice and Bob are exploring a supposedly haunted house. Bob sees a small detail in the background of the painting has changed after he turns his back for a moment.
    • The innocent smile of the young woman changes into a smirk while Alice and Bob turn their backs the painting.
  • Justified: The specter of lord of the mansion Hortensius Malicus rests in that painting.
  • Inverted: A changing painting or photo is Played for Laughs.
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob are exploring a supposedly haunted house. Bob sees a painting develop a Slasher Smile after he turns his back...but it turns out the house had a gas leak and Bob was hallucinating.
  • Double Subverted: But after the leak gets dealt with, he comes back, and the paintings still change.
  • Zigzagged: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Averted: No paintings or photos change in a creepy way.
  • Enforced: The author is doing a spoof of scary movies and knows this is a common trope.
  • Lampshaded:
Bob: A minute ago, that painting didn't have that smile...I'm getting creeped out.
  • Invoked: Dracone swaps out paintings while Bob isn't looking to gaslight him.
  • Exploited: Bob takes pictures of the changing painting to prove that the house is haunted.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Ho-hum, the old 'creepy changing painting.' That's old as silent movies!"

I-I'm not trying to be funny, but I feel like the picture on the main page changed...
