Basic Trope: A character in an adaptation is a different species than they were in the source material.
- Straight: In comic books, Bob has a cat named Alice. In the movie adaptation, she's a dog.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice is a human in the movie. She somehow still acts like a cat.
- The adaptation changes the species of all of the characters.
- Downplayed:
- Alice was an alien in the comics but is now human.
- Alice was originally human but is now a Half-Human Hybrid.
- Alice was originally an alien but is now a different species of alien.
- Alice was a Siamese cat in the comics. In the film adaptation, she's a Siberian cat.
- Justified: Alice was transformed into a dog early in the movie adaptation.
- Inverted: Everything about Alice changes except her species.
- Subverted: Bob frequently talks about his pet, Cat. Cat turns out to be a dog, just as she was in the source material.
- Double Subverted: It turns out that Bob is just pet-sitting the dog. He actually does have a cat.
- Parodied: Alice was a dog in the original. Now she's a horse with the mannerisms of a dog.
- Zig Zagged: There's a lot of animals in the franchise. In the movie, some undergo species changes to some degree, others don't.
- Averted: Alice's species never changes.
- Enforced:
- The creators thought Alice would be more likable as a dog.
- The costuming department couldn't afford the materials to make Alice convincingly six legged, so they gave her double pointed ears instead.
- Alice was originally a rare species of lizard, so the producers of the movie decided to make her a snake for the sake of convenience.
- Lampshaded: "In another story, you'd be the Team Pet."
- Invoked: Alice, a human in the comics and initially in the movie, drinks a potion that will turn her into a dragon.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: ???
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "Why is Alice a dog in the movie? I remember her being a cat in the original comics."
- Implied: Alice still looks like a cat in the movie, but at times it's hinted that she might be a different breed of cat or even a different creature altogether.
