- Bofur, Gimizh, and the Dale-men are trapped when the Orcs cave in their tunnel. Their terror, and the terror of their friends trying to dig them out, makes the scenes devoted to them utterly chilling.
- Unlike in canon, Óin's death via the Watcher in the Water is actually witnessed. Thorin, Fíli, and Kíli cannot bear to watch, so it's described in sounds. Which is probably a good thing...
- The author does a magnificent job portraying the horror of what Balin's failed attempt to reclaim Moria must have been like in canon. Chapter 8 begins with droves of the slaughtered Dwarves entering the Halls of Waiting horror-struck, weeping, crying out for each other, desperate and unable to help their still-living friends.
"They cannot get out!" screamed a Dwarrow named Kúlin as he woke, and his shouts rang through the Halls, echoing over the ringing of hammers. "They cannot get out! They cannot get out!"- Another example is Gimli's experience in the Paths of the Dead, where he is almost overcome from terror repeatedly.
- The Ents. Their terrifying side is very much emphasized here since we're seeing them from the Dwarves' perspective rather than from Merry's and Pippin's. Bear in mind that the Ents were originally created to guard the trees against Mahal's children.
