** For an extra bit of freakiness, the second ad just flashes a huge '7/19'The film's theatrical release date in Japan in bright red on a black background before all the aforementioned scenes of death and destruction follow. Brrr.

* 1997 must've been a really difficult time for people in Japan wanting to watch TV. They risked having to witness this and this. The two fifteen-second ads consist of flashing images of various scenes from the movie (among the most prominent being Shinji's Un-Smile) overlaid with each other, soundtracked by what just might be the actual sounds of the apocalypse, ending with Rei giggling (in the first ad) or calm waves (in the second 'coming to cinemas' ad). These two TV spots sum up the whole movie.

Added DiffLines:

*The GAINAX logo animation at the beginning perfectly sets the tone for the movie it introduces: just the word "GAINAX" in crude, grungy white text flashing in the corner of a pitch-black background for a split-second, accompanied by the eerie sound of a record player starting up. Creepy as hell.
