Nightmare Fuel / An Apple Sleep Experiment

Go To

An Apple Sleep Experiment has garnered a reputation as being one of the scariest My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Dark Fics - and by the end of this page, chances are you'll be left feeling as restless as Applejack is in the story... though hopefully nowhere near as homicidal.

Contains unmarked spoilers. You Have Been Warned!

    An Apple Sleep Experiment
  • For starters, there's the fact that the story revolves around Applejack suffering from a potion and fatigue-induced mental breakdown that results in her developing aggressive, paranoid, and eventually bloodlusted tendencies.
    • To make matters worse, she's not the one at fault for it, at least not entirely - Twilight is just as responsible for the whole mess as she is!
  • By the end, Apple Bloom's fate is left entirely unclear. The last we see of her is AJ bucking her into a tree after she managed to inject the cure in her. Twilight's reluctance on telling AJ what happened to her in the following and final scene, coupled with AJ frantically yelling for Twilight to tell her whether or not she's okay, doesn't help matters in the slightest.

    Another Apple Sleep Experiment
  • Taking place seven years after the original, the plot of Another Apple Sleep Experiment sees AJ escaping and exacting revenge on Twilight and the others in the form of harrowing encounters that all end with someone close to the girls being killed.
    • The kicker? It's eventually revealed that she that AJ wasn't even there at all. What Twilight, Pinkie, Fluttershy, Rarity and Rainbow perceived as their crazed former friend going after and murdering their loved ones? THAT WAS THEM.
  • The story's final chapter sees The Reveal that Apple Bloom was the one responsible for the girls' "encounters" with AJ, having unleashed a gaseous version of the sleepless potion onto them while they were preparing for the memorial.
    • When Twilight, disbelieving of Apple Bloom's scheme, tells her that Sweetie Belle (who was one of the number of ponies killed) was her friend, Bloom immediately dismisses the notion in a tone so cold and hateful, it makes you grateful that something like this would never happen in the source material.
Apple Bloom: She ain't my friend! She and Scootaloo abandoned me — you oughta know that! Scoots claimed it was "too difficult to see me like this", and Sweetie? Well, she eventually blamed me for what happened. Fuck 'em both as far as I care.
