The year is Solar Calendar 198.
The risk of death runs high, but among the usual deadly fare, one grisly method of demise stands out the most: [[SpontaneousHumanCombustion Death by fire.]]

Known as the "Spontaneous Human Combustion", many people now face the risk of turning into "Infernals", rampaging beasts with no control over themselves and in a state of burning pain. It's a completely random and extremely fatal process, with nearly no way to stop it. To combat this, the world established "Special Fire Forces" - groups with members who can control flames enough to extinguish the Infernals and put the rampaging souls to rest. Some officers can control fire, while others can create fire in unique ways.

Shinra Kusakabe is one such person. Armed with the power of [[FlyingFirepower Devil's footprints]] and a fiendish smile, he aims to become a hero and uncover the secret of the Infernals to better the world as a member of Special Fire Force Company 8. However, Company 8 exists as InternalAffairs to investigate the secrets and lies of many groups across TheEmpire. Meaning Shinra and his allies will have to journey across the nation and battle criminals, cults and other officers to uncover the truth about the Infernals. Especially as Shinra is also investigating the fire that killed his family 12 years ago...

A manga started in 2015 by Atsushi Ohkubo of ''Manga/SoulEater'' fame. In 2016, Kodansha brought the series over to the west under the name ''Fire Force''. An anime adaptation by David Production was announced in November 2018.

----
!! Tropes found in ''Enen No Shoubotai'':

* AbandonedArea: In a variation of an AbandonedMine, the Tokyo subway system has been abandoned and sealed off and renamed the Netherworld. It remains a highly dangerous, incredibly vast underground system that was destroyed by the cataclysm that wrecked the planet. This results in the state religion views it as the ''literal entrance to Hell'' because the sun's light cannot reach into it. This was probably done to discourage people like Vulcan from exploring. As a result most believers are very worried about going into it. [[spoiler: Being religiously forbidden and just plain terrifying to the average person made it the perfect place for the cultists to hide out (there's also the irony of a bunch of sun cultists hiding in a place where the sun don't shine), though they're probably going to abandon it after they fight with the 8th fire brigade.]]
** Not as abandoned as it first appears, [[spoiler: there was a regiment of assassins living in the Netherworld to sever the state.]]
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Benimaru, leader of Company 7 has one. Company 7 is ordered, to the point that he tells his crew to reinforce his (the "admirer's") house so he won't have to stay at HQ like the rest of the citizens after the brigade's [[StuffBlowingUp usual tactics]].
* ActionGirl: A pre-requisite for women in the Fire Force, unless they are nuns. Even the nuns put up a fight when they have to.
** The mysterious Knights of Ashen Flame organisation the Fire Force battles have high-ranking and powerful female members who can fight as well.
* AchillesInHisTent: Benimaru is the strongest person in the Fire Force but refuses to get involved with the Empire's affairs because he opposes the government. It takes a oath of brotherhood between him and the Captain of Company 8 for him to begin helping the investigation.
* AfterActionHealingDrama: Following one of the most intense battles with the White Hooded criminals, Shinra suffers from terrible wounds that require hospital treatment to save his life.
* AfterTheEnd: The series is set 250 years after The Great Disaster caused a world to be engulfed in flame. The Tokyo Empire survived, but most of the world was ruined.
* AlasPoorVillain: One of the Infernals Shinra & Co. have to put down is a widower with a teenage daughter who calmly waits for his death. Shinra feels awful about killing him but has no choice.
** Infernals in general get this treatment as they are in constant pain and unable to control themselves. Except for Setsuo, [[KickTheSonOfABitch who receives no such sympathy.]]
* AndIMustScream: Sentiment Infernals fully aware of what is happening to them and once the transformation ends, they exist in constant pain and burn until they are killed. Also, Infernals don't age, so they ''have'' to be killed for the pain to stop. Some of them have survived since the cataclysm. ''They have been burning to death for 250 years''.
* AntiAntichrist: Shinra is confronted with the idea he is meant to bring about the EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt with his flames. After the shock wears off, he declares his intentions to protect people and fight against anything that endangers the world.
* AlternateUniverse: One where the entire planet was wrecked by flames and Japan was one of, if not the only, place that survived the disaster and was conquered by another country/ideology, to the annoyance of the traditionalists/barbarians in the Seventh Brigade. Also, people developed flame powers.
* ArcherArchetype / ColdSniper: The cult's archer, Arrow, is exceptionally skilled, cleanly eliminating [[spoiler: Rekka's]] heart from a great distance and then serve an arm with a second shot (granted [[spoiler: Rekka]] was frozen in a block of ice at the time). She is also capable of criticizing her fellow cultists and is quite pretty.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Vulcan to Lisa ("Why do you looks so insecure?") when [[spoiler: she declares she's only the cult's tool and she doesn't care what happens to her or Vulcan (this is after a lot of signs she's uncomfortable with her role)]].
* ArrowsOnFire: One of the people in white hoods has an ability to conjure flame bow and arrows. They can ether act as piecing shots or explosives.
* ArtShift: Ohkubo is able to radically shift his style for the sake of a good scare.
** Giovanni the PlagueDoctor gets two in Chapter 70: First he gets very "[[LineBoil sketchy]]" when creepily feeling up Feeler [[spoiler: AKA Lisa]] and reminding of her place, then he gets "bold and sharp" when he gloats that the everything he has been taught. him and that it will gain the fire fighters ''nothing'' (Oubi's response: "[[ShutUpHannibal Then he must've been a bad teacher]]").
* BadAssNormal: Company 8 Captain, Akitaru Oubi: unlike his subordinates and peers, he has no flame-powers but can keep up with them thanks to constant training and the usage of Brigade tools.
** Captain Sōichirō Hague also counts as he simply uses firefighting tools to duel with monsters. The fact he has lived into old age proves that he is no slouch.
* BadassBystander: The Infernal widower mentioned above. When a person ignites, the agonizing pain is beyond all comprehension and forces them to go berserk. Instead of attacking others or destroying things, the man had a strong enough will to retain a level of sanity. Calmly waiting for the Force to put him down, while avoiding damaging anything around him and never once harming his daughter. While being on fire. Akitaru believes that his actions prove he was strong enough to beat his condition.
* BigBad: The Evangelist. The mastermind behind most of the suffering and the leader of Knight of Ashen Flame: the main villainous faction in the world.
* BlackAndGrayMorality: In the grand scheme of things, the fractured nature of the Fire Force makes them a pretty morally compromised and troublesome group. Thankfully, they battle against an outright evil cult and monsters.
* BizarreAndImprobableBallistics: Commander Hinawa of Eighth Brigade. Being a second-generation fire officer, he can manipulate the explosion caused from firing of gunpowder and is shown to weaken a bullet power fired as well as [[http://static.mangainn.me/mangas/4131/145738/009_01_21_2016_13_29_11.jpg changing bullets' trajectory]].
** PinballProjectile: Using the same ability, he can create several ricochets by manipulating [[http://static.mangainn.me/mangas/4131/145738/017_01_21_2016_13_29_11.jpg sparks from bullets' impact with objects]]. The result can be [[http://static.mangainn.me/mangas/4131/145738/018_01_21_2016_13_29_11.jpg terrifying]].
* BodyDouble: [[spoiler: Two cultists perfectly imitate the Hinawa and Akitaru in order to turn Benimaru of Company 7 against them, causing a distraction while they release the Fire Bugs.]]
** Yona of the Cult [[spoiler: is able to change the appearance of anyone. Including himself.]]
* BoltOfDivineRetribution: One theory behind what Human Combustion is. The Sun God punishing the wicked. Although it strikes the innocent just as often as it hits the guilty.
* CallingYourAttacks: One of the things Arthur had to be taught by Beni during their training session was to quit doing this (and talking in general) so he can take advantage of the element of surprise.
* CharacterTics: Shinra has a habit of grinning like a madman when he's nervous or anxious, frightening or unnerving others, and leading to a lot of embarrassing and misunderstood situations. In particular, [[spoiler: this was used against him as a child when he "smiled" at his mother's dead body, earning him the malicious nickname "Demon" because people thought he was smiling because he enjoyed what was happening.]] Though on the beneficial side, it tends to do the same to his opponents in combat. [[spoiler: His brother does it too, though it's unclear if he's also nervous or [[ForTheEvulz excited]].]]
** Oubi is never not training; this is how he, the lone muggle, ensures he can keep up with a squad of fire-users.
** Princess Hibana calls everyone worms.
** Karim uses [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment repeatedly repeats redundant words over and over]] so much [[http://www.mangainn.me/manga/chapter/150662_fire-brigade-of-flames-chapter-24/page_16 the translator had to clarify that's really how he talks]]. Has to do with the nature of his weapon, which takes air and repeatedly cycles it until fire becomes ice.
** "Joker" doesn't just SayItWithHearts, he uses [[PlayingCardMotifs clubs, spades, and diamonds too]].
** The two creepy twins of the Seventh Brigade use two different fonts when talking, apparently to make them seem cutesy yet erratic.
* CombatTentacles: [[spoiler: Lucy/Feeler's]] flame powers take the form of octopus tentacles. When they really get going they appear half-human, half-octopus.
* ChurchMilitant - Company 1 is extremely religious and backed by the Church. There are extremely well organised when it comes to fighting Infernals and many of its high-ranking members are priests.
* TheConspiracy: Quite a few, mostly hinging on the truth about the Infernals:
** Company 8's real purpose is to figure out the truth about Infernals and keep an eye on other shady sections.
** The industrial section apparently has some, and is doing unethical experiments on Infernals. They also don't seem to care about sharing any of this data. [[spoiler:Even through evidence suggests that the disease is being deliberately spread.]]
** Captain Burns is keeping something secret, among them [[spoiler: the truth about the death of Shinra's family]]
** Joker has something to do with flame-powers and [[spoiler: also claims to know the truth about Shinra's family. He also flat-out tells Shinra that the white-hooded cultists have his brother]].
** Company 3's [[spoiler: leader is working with the cultists. When he is discovered, a large number of officers disappear as well. Implying that many of them where also part of the cult.]]
* CosmicKeystone: The Adolla Brust. A mysterious flame that burns endlessly and doesn't need fuel. It powers the entire Tokyo Empire and is strangely found inside Shinra's body, which makes him a target of TheBigBad. Turns out it allows him to detect powerful emotions and sense other people with the Adollla. [[spoiler: There are meant to be eight people with the Adolla and they are needed for the Ash Knight's schemes.]]
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Played with. Average humans avert this by being vulnerable to heat and fire, while Second and Third Gen fighters have a heightened resistance to heat and fire. Although this resistance can be overcome by objects and attacks that are too hot.
* CreepyTwins: Two of them attached to the Seventh Brigade; they praise an elderly sweet vendor's food as "her last effort before she dies" and are excited to see Shinra's flame dancing after saying it's going to be stupid-looking. It appears they're imitating their leader Beni's rude way of talking, though he doesn't believe he's ''that'' rude.
* CrystalDragonJesus - The dominate religion is clearly modelled after Catholicism, but they worship the Great Sun God.
* {{Cult}}: One that wants to ''[[spoiler: turn the earth into a sun]]''. Also [[spoiler: they have Shinra's brother Sho.]]
* CuteMonsterGirl: [[spoiler: Lucy/Feeler when she amps up her CombatTentacles.]]
* CuteWitch: Maki of Company 8 (not to be confused with Tamaki) has a witch theme: She has two flame {{Familiar}}s called Meru Meru and Pusa Pusa that Vulcan makes [[OwlBeDamned owl-themed]] armor for (well they're owl-like to him, anyway) and makes a special witch's hat for herself.
** CuteBruiser: Flail the cultist and his men gets get their asses handed to them by a little girl and her two "pets". Because Maki is a destructive force.
* DanceBattler: Shinra is able to pull off some breakdancing and kicking moves in conjunction with his powers. Justified in the sense that his powers are focused in his feet. He even flat out calls it breakdancing in chapter 40, along with giving it the nickname; "Flaming Top."
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler: To an almost ludicrous level when 8th brigade defeats 5th, they have a barbecue together, barely an hour later. Hibana also starts regularly hanging out with 8th.]]
* DemonicPossession: Or something like it. [[spoiler:Shinra's body and mind gets taken over by a violent spirit. It takes a severe beating and HeroicResolve for him to break free.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler: Hibana crossed it after her and Iris' nunnery burned down and became twisted and mad for money and power, the only things that matter in the world.]]
* DoesNotLikeShoes: Shinra again, though not necessarily out of preference. Shoes would just be burned off when he uses his powers, so most of the time he's either barefoot or wearing easily removable flip-flops.
* EarlyBirdCameo - Burns appears in Chapter 2, during Shinra's flashback, before appearing in Chapter 5.
** Arthur appears on the title page of Chapter 0 before joining the main cast in Chapter 2.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: In the beginning, the Fire Company helmets read 'fire soldier'. After the series was branded 'Fire Force' internationally, the helmets changed to read 'Fire Force'. WordOfGod claims this helped to highlight the organised nature of the group and looked cool.
* Eldritch Location: The Adolla World is a place where fire burns infinitely and without fuel or emissions. It also changes depending on who is viewing it.
** Shinra [[spoiler: and Shō]] see a blank white void with burning bones scattered around and other other oddities.
** [[spoiler: Burns and '52']] see the dimension as a dark cosmic void featuring twisted architecture and grotesque ''things'' that leave them screaming on the floor.
* TheEmpire: Tokyo is not the name of the capital city. It is the name of the empire the cast lives within. Also doubles as a TheTheocracy. It's not all that bad as it allowed human civilisation to reform and allowed refugees passage upon the Great Disaster.
** EmpireWithADarkSecret - As more is revealed this seems more and more likely. [[spoiler:It appears that the power source for the entire empire is fuelled by HumanSacrifice. Also, the Church is hiding the truth behind it's foundation.]]
* EpicFlail: How Flail the cultist's powers manifest, as a giant flame ball at the end of a (apparently regular) chain.
* EquivalentExchange / BalancingDeathsBooks: One particularly conscious flame-person's excuse for why he's a killer: [[spoiler: as a fire-fighter he saved loads of people so it's only fair he balances things out by killing loads of people. This was ''before'' he became a flame-person...]]
* EvilIsHammy: Princess Hibana, so very much.
* EyepatchAfterTimeSkip: Burns is shown without an eyepatch during Shinra's past, implying he lost his eye during the past 12 years. [[spoiler: It's eventually revealed he lost his eye much earlier, Burns took off his eyepatch when the fire inside his eye socket began burning out of control.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Li Huo Yan (apparently they're literally shut, as Karim tells him to open them); Takeru "Juggernaut" Noto to show how meek he is in spite of his large size.
* EyeScream: You don't get a cool eyepatch without one. Captain Burns' hidden eye is not a pretty sight and it seems to burn when he fights. Joker's isn't much better. [[spoiler:Both Joker and Burns lost an eye gazing upon the Evangelist and 'hell'. Despite their strength, both are brought to their knees out of terror and pain.]]
* EyepatchOfPower: 1st Brigade Commander Leonardo Barnes (or possibly [[MeaningfulName Burns]]). Joker keeps one eye covered with a lacy scarf. The Seventh Brigade leader has an X on one eye, the other is usually covered by his bangs.
* FantasyKeepsake: [[spoiler: Joker managed to grab a burning piece of earth when in the Adolla realm.]] This proves that he wasn't hallucinating.
* FeatherMotif: The flame sword of [[spoiler: Shinra's brother]] has feathers coming out of it, similar to how Hibana's flames are flower-themed.
* FlamingSword: Arthur wields one. Fittingly, he's named it Excalibur. [[spoiler: Shinra's brother also has one.]]
* FlashStep: [[spoiler: Sho, Shinra's brother, is ''very'' quick, but not as fast as Joker]].
* FlechetteStorm: Princess Hibana uses the fire equivalent of [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Senbonzakura]].
* FlyingFirepower: Shinra's fire powers enable him to either perform fire-boosted jumps or hover and fly for brief periods.
* GadgeteerGenius: Vulcan, the inventor the 8th Brigade wants to recruit as their "chemist".
** Wannabe FriendToAllLivingThings: He ''loves'' animals and his goal is to make robot versions of all the animals that went extinct in the cataclysm before the story began (and there's a lot of them: Iris recognizes the model whale and elephant on Vulcan's house because she saw them in a book) and his most prized possession [[spoiler: that he's willing to give to Shinra as a show of trust and turns out to be the hiding place of the Amaterasu power plant's key]] is a holoprojector of ocean animals.
%%* GenderBender: Since it's unclear what this really means: Shinra has a dream about a beautiful girl with shoulder-length fair hair and long eyelashes who is wreathed in flames, whom he assumes is Sister Iris. The only other person who matches this description is ''Sho'', who actually has flame powers but has never been seen without full armor. Shinra believes he saw the girl's body in the dream but that could just be him "filling in the blanks" because of the dream girl's feminine face.
* GoodOldWays: The Seventh Brigade and their community in [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sens%C5%8D-ji Asakusa]] are apparently the only "traditional" Japanese in the country (they don't wear western clothes, worship in cathedrals, use nuns in their missions, or regard the emperor as their leader) and are seen as "barbarians" by everyone else.
* GrotesqueCute: The fire brigade has three mascots which were originally cute animals until [[RuleOfThree the third one]] [[TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers was changed into an old man.]] Shinra thinks it's disturbing while others find it adorable.
* HeroAcademy: The Fire Department trains new officers for the Fire Force. Shirna, Arthur and Ogun all attended and it is run by members of Company 4.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Shinra genuinely wants to be a hero but being a flame-person with a demonic grin combined with the fiery deaths of his mother and baby brother isn't helping.
** VillainWithGoodPublicity: Shinra and presumably the rest of the country believes the fire fighters are true heroes; various conspiracies, dark hints [[spoiler: like the captain possibly hiding the fact that Shinra's brother is alive, the killing of a flame person who wasn't an uncontrollable monster, and the torture/experimentation of a captured flame person]], and good old-fashioned corruption say otherwise. On the other hand those who witnessed their loved ones being "released" from being a flame person are usually upset.
** It's revealed that the callousness of the firemen is what led to an empowered official and a muggle "ordinary" firefighter to form the Eight Brigade.
* {{Hellfire}}: What the Adolla Burst might be.
** Shinra also channels the PowerOfRock to create a dark explosion. No prizes for figuring out what he calls it.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Joker. He's unlikely to be on the side of the fire brigade but he doesn't appear to be on the side of [[spoiler: the cultists, as he tells Shinra they have his brother Sho and later attacks him (Sho) when they meet face to face]] either.
* HighHeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Lucy goes (returns) to Vulcan's side when she's had enough of Giovanni's manipulative ways]].
* HisStoryRepeatsItself - Shinra spends years trying to convince people that he didn't kill his family and that their wwas a monster in his house the day they died. After years of study and investigating to find out what that monster was and where it is, he finally gets an answer. [[spoiler:His mother turned into an Infernal and was that monster. She escaped and nobody knows what happened to her after that.]] This once again leaves Shinra searching for answers and that monster with no idea where to start, but with very different motives.
* HollywoodCyborg: Giovanni, the PlagueDoctor mask-wearing leader of the 3rd Brigade: he's got a trick hand that acts as a grappling hook and [[spoiler: claims he's harassed ''generations'' of Vulcan's family over the key that controls the Amaterasu power plant, though that might just be Vulcan and his father and grandfather]]. Later one it's revealed he might be [[spoiler: a FrankensteinsMonster who's MultiarmedAndDangerous]].
* HopeCrusher: Hibana tries to be this, belittling Iris' kindness and Shirna's heroic dreams. [[ShutUpHannibal Shinra took it as a sign to try harder.]]
* HornedHumanoid: A horned Infernal appeared in Shinra's home 12 years ago. Another one attacked Asakusa Asakusa two years ago. These Demon Infernals are too durable to be destroyed normally. It demands a explosion strong enough top level a city to defeat them. Also, nobody knows how they are created. When a White Hood eats a "firebug" and became a ''demon'', his partner is shocked.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: Before the Eighth was formed firefighters racked up "points" for killing flame-persons, the more dangerous the better. It's not known if this is done either officially or "casually" at present.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Subverted, see below.
* [[IdenticalGrandson Identical Granddaughter]] - Captain of Company 4 has the exact same hair colour, eyebrows and glasses as his granddaughter in Company 6. Shinra is pretty shocked when he notices.
* IdiotHero: Arthur. Aside from his insistence that he's a knight in spite of the lack of evidence that knights exist in this world, he begins a fight with an enhanced Flame Person and thinks something is "off" while getting beaten, causing his opponent to laugh and criticize him for making excuses about losing. [[spoiler: Arthur then suddenly realizes he's fighting with his left hand. This isn't him holding back or getting caught in an illusion, ''he literally didn't realize he was using the wrong hand''. He switches to his right hand and promptly [[CurbStompBattle annihilates his foe with a single strike.]] Later he actually has to remind himself that the "hand he uses chopsticks with" is the correct hand to hold Excalibur]].
* JurisdictionFriction - Each Fire Force Company is in charge of a certain ares and they really don't like the other groups interfering with their work. Meaning, Company 8 often needs an excuse to get involved without risking a fight.
* GeniusDitz: When he and Shinra have to sneak into a locked room he uses a "mini-Excalibur", a one-time use hilt made of plastic, to cut the locks. Shinra is horrified as this makes it very obvious who went into the room, but Arthur doesn't care and [[TheCuckooLanderWasRight points out]] that if the people in charge had dealt with the various flame people conspiracies they wouldn't have needed to do this in the first place.
** He's also the one of the first people to notice [[spoiler: Asakusa has been infiltrated by lookalike cultists intending to cause confusion when he (somehow) realizes at once that one of the creepy twins is actually a "manlet" with an altered face ("her" sister being the only other person to see this).]]
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Tamaki Kotatsu from the First Brigade has this problem, termed "Lucky Lewd Syndrome": she wears a bikini under a cut-off uniform (necessary, as a result of the way her powers work) and has a habit of accidentally tripping chest/crotch/boobs-first into people and then accusing them of sexual harassment. In what's probably the ultimate example of this, she somehow loses all her clothes by tripping [[spoiler: which proves that she's the real deal in place of a body doubling cultist to Iris]].
* InsufferableGenius: Vulcan, a gifted "chemist"/inventor was courted by all the brigades and the company that effectively rules them and rejected all of them to work on his own. As a result he has to send his assistant farther and farther to get parts because the company forbid anyone from selling parts to him. He's also obsessed with "permanence" due to his family's involvement in creating the Amaterasu power plant that is supposed to run forever and smashes his assistant's first invention to show him how that he has to create strong things that last forever (including [[{{Nakama}} bonds of friendship]]).
** {{Irony}}: Said unbreakable bonds [[spoiler: includes Lucy, a cultist spy who only became friends with him to find Amaterasu's key.]]
* ItIsDehumanizing: The cultists have simple names based on their fire powers: Flail uses an EpicFlail; Arrow is an ArcherArchetype, Mirage has illusion powers, etc. Lisa and Arrow claim they're only tools for the cult and its "preacher", which their adversaries find rather sad.
* ItsPersonal: Beni steps into Shinra and Arthur's fight with the "demonized" cultist because A) he's stronger than the two kids and B) a similar "demon" injured his second-in-command.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Beni, the Seventh Brigade leader, is rude and lazy but he really does care about his crew and the civilians around him (even if he blows up their buildings every time a flame person appears).
* KeepingSecretsSucks: Averted, Shinra tells his whole brigade everything he knows about Joker, the cultists, and [[spoiler: that his own brother might be their enemy]].
* KillTheGod: Shinra promises to do this, if [[spoiler:the Evangelist is what people came it is and if its plans are as evil as they seem.]]
* KnightInShiningArmour: Arthur seems to genuinely believes he's this. [[spoiler: Sho has been brought up like this by the cult as well.]]
* LastNameBasis: Apparently this world uses western naming conventions except for the 7th Brigade, a group of traditionalists/nationalists who flout authority by dressing in traditional Japanese clothes and going by their last names first.
* LightIsNotGood: The cultists' white outfits are a Shinto purification theme crossed with a KnightTemplar. Interestingly the cult's crosses are black while the fire brigades', their religion's, and Arthur's is white (or at least uncoloured)
* ALighterShadeOfBlack - Joker is a violent criminal who will endanger people's lives for the sake of his goals. But he opposes the cult and their goals to the point of aiding the Fire Force against them.
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: The mysterious eternal flame known as the Adolla Burst is found ''inside'' certain people. Either because the can SaveTheWorld or become an ApocalypseMaiden, they are hunted by both the Fire Force and the Ash Knights.
* MagicPlasticSurgery / MadArtist: [[spoiler: One of the cultists uses heat to sculpt people's faces, though he occasionally winds up melting and burning them to death instead. Another member chides him for wasting loyal "materials".]]
* MagneticHero: Shinra, has a habit of drawing in allies. So far he's won won over power-worshiping sadists, a "barbarian", an antisocial engineer and some of their followers. His power is called ''Adore''-a Burst, after all.
* TheManBehindTheMan: All the Fire Force companies suffer from this. The organisation is meant to be a collaboration between three different groups to SaveTheWorld, but the individual companies have strong loyalties to one of the founding or supporting groups. Company 7 avoids this as they are just a group of ruffians is too powerful for the government to ignore.
** Company 1 and 6 are controlled by TheChurch.
** Company 2 is run by the military.
** Company 3 and 5 are influenced by the MegaCorp.
** Company 4 and 8 are underneath the Fire Department.
* MegaCorp.: Haijima Industries have a tremendous amount of power because the manufacture ''all of the Fire Forces equipment''. This means that they have control over Company 5.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: Licht is secretly working with Joker]]
** [[spoiler: Giovanni is part of the Ash Knights]]
** [[spoiler: Lisa is actually a member of the cult and has been living with Vulcan so she can find the key to the Amaterasu power plant. She seems to have a HeelFace turn but decides at the last second not to go with Vulcan when they're rescued by Licht]]
* NebulousEvilOrganisation - Haijima Industries hasn't done much in the story, but they are distrusted by most people within the Fire Force and the majority of their employees are MadScientists.
* NotSoDifferent: Shinra and Princess Hibana, after he learns [[spoiler: she and Iris were also the only survivors of a devastating fire.]]
** Shinra and Rekka: they're both "optimistic idiots" who will do anything to "rid the world of fear of flames" [[spoiler: though Rekka's method of turning at children into flame people in search of a "pure flame" and manipulating his subordinates isn't something Shinra approves of]].
* NiceGuy: Shinra is so unflinchingly nice to everyone he meets. The only person in his life who doesn't consider him a friend is Arthur, and that's because he see's him as rival instead.
* NunsAreMikos: The Fire Soldiers use nuns to confirm last rites onto a flame-person to purify it when its destroyed. Ironically the Japanese "traditionalists" of the Seventh brigade don't use nuns ''or'' mikes.
* Obliviously Evil: The serial killer within Company 1 seems detected from reality to the point he doesn't understand why his victims are terrified of him. After he's finished with one victim, he simply and cheerfully tells his next that they have to be strong and brave if they want to succeed.
* ObviouslyEvil: Licht, the chemist forced onto 8th Brigade by the higher-ups, is creepily eccentric [[spoiler: he's also Joker's partner]]. They'd rather have Vulcan who's ''violently'' eccentric.
* PetalPower: Princess Hibana's flames are flower-shaped.
* PlayingWithFire: Everyone with abilities are classified into three areas.
** There is 1st Generation, people with no control over their ability and are little more than mindless monsters when it randomly activates.
** Then there is 2nd Generation, people who have the ability to control already existing flames, be it turning the fire into shapes, move it, or even nullify it.
** Finally there is 3rd Generation, people who are given strange abilities with fire and unlike 2nd gen. they can create their own fire.
* PlagueDoctor: One of Company Captains, Giovanni, wears a plague doctor mask.
* PlayingWithSyringes: Somebody is creating Infernals artificially using bugs. [[spoiler: It's actually a member of Company 1 and the cult they serve. These bugs may also be aliens.]]
* PowerIncontinence: First Generation people can't control their flames, leading to either spontaneous combustion or a transformation into a Infernal. Second and Third Generations have strong resistance to heat and burning as a RequiredSecondaryPowers as a countermeasure.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: Subverted. Arthur manages to screw his up before beginning a battle, instead settling for a mere, "humph."
* PerspectiveFlip: The fire 12 years ago is initially shown from Shinra's perspective, with later details being highlighted through Burns' view on the event. [[spoiler: Joker's flashback shows yet another perspective on things as the fire is a backdrop to a major turning point in his life. Things are also show from the view of Shinra's mother.]]
* ProductionThrowback: There are a lot of references to Soul Eater hidden through the series, which as Ohkubo's pervious manga.
** Akitaru's mask is simliar to Eibon.
** Maki's little flares look like souls from Soul Eater.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure - The Chief of the Fire Department. Despite all the crazy schemes Obi pulls and feathers he rustles, his old Chief stands by him and supports him as much as possible. In a world of shadowy figures and questionable organisations, he seems to be the lone exception.
* ReligiousHorror: While present early in the story, later arcs really push this element of the series using Catholic imagery and by looking at the corruption and darkness within the church. The main villains being cultists and some ''thing'' beyond humanity promotes this aspect.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Benimaru, Captain of Company 7, constantly defers to his second-in-command, Konro. This is because he feels Konro's experienced and responsible approach [[spoiler: put next to his scarce of both his arms and powers to save Beni]] makes him more qualified. While everyone else sees Benimaru as a leader, he struggles to see himself as such or to trust his own judgement.
** Vulcan refused to join any of the brigades or the company that owns them [[spoiler: though he reluctantly has something to do with the 3rd brigade leader who's most closely aligned with the company]]
* RememberTheNewGuy: Ogun Montgomery from Company 4 is Shinra and Arthur's perviously unmentioned best friend from their school days.
* RuleOfThree: Princess Hibana has three identical hench-wenches [[spoiler: there's actually at least a dozen of them who attack in groups of three]].
--> "5th Angels Three! [[CallingYourAttacks 3-On-3 Triple Cutting Slasher Ver. 2.3!]]"
--> "'''WAY TOO MANY NUMBERS!'''"
* [[spoiler: Step/foster-]]SiblingYinYang: The nun of Company 8, Iris, is petite, pale, shy, sweet, and wears plain nun clothes. Her step-sister, [[spoiler:Fifth Brigade's Princess Hibana]] is tall, tanned, atheistic, arrogant, sadistic, and dresses like a in a low-cut dress with splits all the way to her hips.
** [[spoiler: Shinra and Sho: Shinra has short black hair and the FaceOfAThug, dark clothes, grins like a demon, wants to save people, and was initially just another recruit; Sho has white clothes, is basically expressionless, belongs to a cult that wants to turn the world into a second sun, and if his throne is any indication he's rather important. When the two finally meet Shinra's first response is to greet his brother; Sho's is to try and slice him in two.]]
* SniperDuel: Between [[FriendlySniper the 8th's Hinawa]] and [[ColdSniper the cult's Arrow]], although they're so powerful Arrow's allies think they're watching a pair of ''tanks''.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Flail is mostly just a brute from the Ash Knights. He was also [[spoiler:the Company 3 officer that Hinawa and Akitaru clashed with in the past. That disagreement lead the pair to found Company 8 and everything that came as a result of that choice.]] NiceJobFixingItVillain.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: With a cast containing Japanese, Chinese and European names: this is to be expected. Many of the titles and ranks are also changed depending on the translation:
** Leonardo or Leonard??
** Sōichirō Arg or Sōichirō Hague.
** Foien Li or Huo Yan Li?
** Is Karim's surname 'Fulham' or 'Flam'?
** Some translations say that Lisa's name is 'Lucy'
** Jonah's name in the official translation is 'Yona'.
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: Ogun from Company 4 can create weapons using his flames.
* StandardBleedingSpots: Shinra basically suffers from all of these as the series goes along.
* StuffBlowingUp: EVERY SINGLE MISSION by the Seventh Brigade involves blowing up buildings to flush out the flame-people. The citizens don't mind as "things can be replaced, lives can't".
* SuperPowerMeltdown: Overusing a Third Gen power cause the body to 'overheat', which means their flames stop using oxygen to burn and instead use Hasn't actually happened yet but [[spoiler: the Seventh Brigade's second-in-command is starting to ''char'' after he used too much of his powers at once]].
* SwitchingPOV - Shinra is typically the narrator of the story, Viktor serves this role frequently.
* ThereIsAnother: [[spoiler: Joker hints that Shinra's brother is alive.]]
** There are several people with the Adolla Burst and all of them are targeted by the Knights of Ashen Flame.
* TortureTechnician: Princess Hibana got a psychotic flame-person begging for mercy.
* UnskilledButStrong: "Juggernaut": he's OneHeadTaller and can create multiple fire missiles but his spirit is weak and easily rattled.
* ViolenceReallyIsTheAnswer: In order to stop the lookalike cultists from spreading chaos and distrust, Beni finally accepts his position as leader and ''orders everyone to fight each other''. Amazingly it works: United in defense of their community, the civilians gleefully pummel each other and the lookalikes in a "fight festival" while Company 7 handles the fires.
* TheVirus / ViralTransformation: The Infernal conduction is a conduction that turns people into fire monsters.
* TheWarOnStraw:
** Princess Hibana is a collection of bad habits. Her claims that BeliefMakesYouStupid, her use of [[FurAndLoathing fur]] are examples of this, as are her StrawNihilist and StrawAtheist tendencies.
*** StrawHypocrite: She's basically a nun-in-title-only, seeing as she's a money-hungry sadistic "scientist" in revealing clothes [[spoiler: she was "less than enthusiastic" about prayer to begin with and eventually rips off her cross and burns it]]; while she disregards God and salvation also thinks she's "special" because [[spoiler: she (and Iris) were spared from the fire, despite her not being terribly devout before]].
** The Cultist with Company 1 is the total opposite of Hibana. [[spoiler: Rekka also serves to show that BeliefMakesYouStupid, as he kills at least 7 seven children, into Infernals because he sincerely believes it'll help his "master" and give the children the power to overcome the flames (if it doesn't kill them).]]
* WeCanRuleTogether - Joker offers Shinra a chance to join him and learn the truth without the law getting in their way. Shinra refuses, but Joker lets him know the offer still stands.
* WhamEpisode - As a series with many masteries, Fire Force is full of these as answers to major questions.
** Chapter 34 reveals what happened to Shō Kusakabe's bones.
** Chapter 61 features a clash between the mysterious Joker and the Kinght's leader.
** The demon that killed Shinra's mother and brother is explain in Chapter 89.
* WhamShot - The end of Chapter 51. [[spoiler: Joker's main ally has worked his way into Company 8.]]
** A flashback [[spoiler: show Shinra's mother as her eye starts to burn. Proving that there was an Infernal that night.]]
** Charon's violent murder of a civilian character brings a new layer of darkness to events.
* WhatDoesThisButtonDo: Iris cannot resist pressing all the buttons in Vulcan's lab causing all of his inventions to attack Shinra and Arthur. [[spoiler: Comes in handy when they come under attack by the Ash Knights.]]
* WingdingEyes: A huge part of the series.
** Princess Hibana has four-petaled flowers/rounded crosses in her eyes. [[spoiler:They turn into hearts for a single panel, implying she has fallen for Shinra's heroic nature and ideals.]]
** Hoshimiya Rekka, a company commander and priest in Squad 1, has stars in his eyes, which may mean WingdingEyes are a possible side effect of having flame powers.
** The commander of Company 7 an X in only one eye, [[spoiler: this shows he's a hybrid between 2nd and 3rd generation fire powers]].
** The cultists' archer has a downward-pointing arrow in her eyes.
** Another cultist has a capital 'A' in his eyes to indicate that he is an Artist.
** Hina and Hika have vertical rectangular pupils, to go with their kitsune motif.
** Tamaki's cat-like "highlights" ''might'' count.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Most flame-people just go berserk, a few of them keep their minds... while going berserk because of the pain.
** BadPowersGoodPeople: Second and Third Generation Flame Users are this, able to control and use fire against the berserk flame-people.
** BadPowersBadPeople: What Princess Hibana believes. [[spoiler:She used to use her power and knowledge of chemistry to create beautiful displays with her Fire Flowers for other young nuns. When they were all (excepting herself and Iris) burned alive in a fire, she was [[DespairEventHorizon driven mad]], believing such a destructive force couldn't possibly be good, leading to her obsession with money and experimenting on Flame-People.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: Shinra literally attempts to beat some sense in to Princess Hibana. [[spoiler: Amazingly it works.]] He doesn't hold back against any of his female opponents and doing so would probably get him killed.
** [[spoiler: Rekka kicks the shit out of Tamaki when he realizes she won't take the fall like a good subordinate]]
* WouldntHitAGirl: Vulcan has no problem throwing cans at Arthur and Shinra's heads but hesitates and then decides not to hit Iris. [[spoiler: The tea-thrower turns out to be a machine modeled after "the woman who lives with [Vulcan]" both of whom continue to pummel Arthur and Shinra while Vulcan himself has no time to mess with intruders.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: The serial killer hidden within Company 1. [[spoiler: In addition to kicking Tamaki while she's down Rekka's responsible for turning at least 7 children into flame persons and Shinra fears he may have been responsible for the fire that burned Hibana and Iris' convent.]]
* WreathedInFlames: [[CreepyTwins Hina and Hika]] of the 7th Brigade's powers: Their flames manifest as clothes and a "mask" that resembles a {{Kitsune}}.
** Burns appears briefly in this state, burning with heat. Even his word balloons appear to be on fire.

* IAmNotLeftHanded: Subverted, see below.
* PetalPower: Princess Hibana's flames are flower-shaped.
--> "'''WAY TOO MANY NUMBERS!'''"
* TheWarOnStraw:
