-> ''[[InvokedTrope The back is what's important!]]''
->--'''Director Mori Toshimichi''' on [[BlazBlue Noel Vermillion's]] design.

A naked woman is shown only by the camera showing her bare back (and nothing below her waist). This usually means someone is seeing her Sexy Front...

It should be noted that this trope actually began in ancient Greece/Rome. A sexy back was considered to be at the top of the list of fetishes in that era; If you think about it, during [[GratuitousLatin pedicatio]] [[hottip:*:That means anal sex.]] generally all you can see is someone's back, so this trope became a fetish by proxy. Then again, most other primates mate from behind, so the tendency to find a female back sexy ''could'' have arisen before any of us were walking upright: this trope just brings out the primal side of us.

This also applies to backless dresses, since it's clear that the lady [[VaporWear is not wearing a bra]]

DressHitsFloor is the below-the-waist equivalent.

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:{{Anime}} and {{Manga}}]]
* Happens to Clare in ''{{Claymore}}'' a couple of times when Rubei tells her to turn around while naked. Of course, what he's seeing is a [[TakeOurWordForIt really horrible-looking scar, or possibly something]] even more {{squick}}tastic, but the idea is the same.
* Riza Hawkeye in the manga version of ''FullmetalAlchemist'', in the manga and anime it also [[spoiler: has a giant tattoo, and burn scars covering it]]. Since it's [[GoodLookingPrivates Riza]], you could still call it Fanservice, and the fourth ending to Brotherhood prominently features her back.
* In the ''FateStayNight'' anime, the audience sees Saber's Sexy Back while Shiro sees the front after she gets out of the bath. Saber [[InnocentFanserviceGirl doesn't seem to mind]] and tells Shiro that he shouldn't think of her as a woman, but as a warrior first. Shiro's reaction? "PleasePutSomeClothesOn!"
* The ''OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' anime has the twins putting a photoshopped picture of Haruhi's shirtless back on the club website[[hottip:*:since Haruhi is actually a girl, but they want people to think she's a boy]], leading Tamaki to falsely conclude that they must've seen something while taking the picture. It's more egregious in the manga, where the twins put Haruhi's head on ''[[ShirtlessScene Tamaki's chest]]'' and Tamaki is still fooled into thinking it's real.
* ''MahouSenseiNegima'' does this on occasion, but it's usually overshadowed by the fact that most of the girls are naked all the time anyway, their modesty only preserved by CensorSteam and [[AnimeAnatomy lack of detail]].
** In an oddly justified use of the trope, Setsuna's tribal [[RavensAndCrows crow]] garb comes with an exposed back purely for [[HalfHumanHybrid half-demons]] and [[{{Youkai}} full crows]] in humanoid form to release their [[WingedHumanoid wings]]. Otherwise the new appendages would appear underneath the user's shirt uncomfortably.
** Later on we get [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v28/c255/10.html Asuna in a hospital gown]]. Only KenAkamatsu could turn a freaking ''[[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v28/c256/9.html hospital gown]]'' into FetishFuel.
** Later still, we have the backless dresses variant at a fancy ball. [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v31/c279/11.html Check out Chisame and Ku Fei here.]] (Warning: Enormous Spoilers)
** Ako could also qualify. ''She'' may think that her back is ugly, but [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v14/c122/18.html if you're into chicks with scars...]]
* Subverted in ''Anime/CodeGeass''. During Kallen's ShowerScene, the curtain gets pulled open, and we get a SexyBack shot. Then the [[MaleGaze camera pans down...]]
* Averted in the OP sequence of ''{{Mnemosyne}}'', which shows Rin, in the buff, pressing against a stone pillar. Needless to say, her sexy back, legs, and rear end are visible for [[FanService your viewing pleasure]].
* When Akane's body was [[GrandTheftMe possessed by a vengeful spirit doll]] in ''RanmaOneHalf'', it tried to distract Ranma (so it could kill him afterwards) by stripping bare in front of him. The audience only got to see Akane's back and upper hips; the real Akane (trapped in a doll's body) threw herself at Ranma's face to keep him from looking.
* [[Manga/{{Gintama}} Gintoki]] gets a lot of these moments. Most of the time, they're played for laughs but that doesn't stop the fangirls from ogling over him.
* ''FushigiYuugi'' gives us a view of Miaka's back as she's bathing to purify herself for the summoning ceremony (her butt's included though, poor girl). We don't see her when she turns around. Tamahome does.
* Although [[SpiceAndWolf Holo]] doesn't so much have a SexyBack as she does a Sexy Complete Lack Of Clothes, she ''does'' use the trope to justify why she's not going to remove her (ear- and tail- concealing) cloak for some strange merchant Holo and Lawrence met that day.
* In ''Anime/ZeroZeroNineOne'' Mylene Hoffman/ Agent 009-1 has several SexyBack scenes combined with {{Modesty Bedsheet}}s. Indeed, the very first time you see her in the series is when she gets out of bed wearing only a bedsheet and showing plenty of Sexy Back.
* ''SoulEater''. Tsubaki Natsukasa in the first opening and the various [[FuroScene Furo Scenes]].
* Weapons-grade {{Pettanko}} Isis Egret from ''MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce'' has another side that's gotten a lot of attention lately, with a certain racerback outfit.
* Mixed with the Japanese nape-of-neck thing in ''SamuraiChamploo'' when Fuu poses for an artist. First she's asked to only loosen her kimono a bit and let the collar slide a little lower. OK, that's a bit naughty. The artist just keeps prompting her to lower the collar more and more. Scandalous!
* Marik Ishtar's tattooed back is lampshaded as such in [[YugiohTheAbridgedSeries Yugioh The Abridged Series]].
* When [[EstrogenBrigadeBait Akune]] of ''MedakaBox'' first joins the student council, we get [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/medaka_box/v01/c006/16.html this shot.]] [[{{Fanservice}} Yum.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:ComicBooks]]
* [[XMen Astonishing X-Men]] #21. When Colossus and Kitty are given a refuge from the Breakworld's Powerlord by former gladiator Arghanne, Colossus considers the ramifications of his presence on Breakworld before turning in. Hearing his confusion, Kitty emerges from behind the curtain. The reader is treated to a clear view of Kitty's nude back. Colossus clearly sees her front.
-->"Now I am more confused. But somehow not as tired."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:{{Film}}]]
* In the Tony Jaa film ''The Protector'', there is a scene where Madame Rose rises from a bath, back to the audience, front to her lawyer lover. [[spoiler:This is likely also to prevent the audience from noticing that she's actually a transsexual.]]
* ''Fracture''
* Dina Meyer's character in the ''JohnnyMnemonic'' movie.
* Jennifer Coolidge does this in ''[[SeltzerAndFriedberg Epic Movie]].''
* The poster of ''TheRedViolin'' has a SexyBack made up to look like a violin.
* BaiLing has a serious moment of SexyBack in ''TheCrow''.
* ''JennifersBody'': For a movie where the main marketing point was MeganFox, a sexy wet back is the most you'll get.
* AngelinaJolie after emerging from the tub in a scene from ''{{Wanted}}''.
* While we do get to see Cerina Vincent's sweater bulges in other scenes of {{Cabin Fever}}, what is arguably the raciest sex shot shows her only from the back. This is largely for plot-based reasons as [[TemptingFate it shows her lover squeezing her back, which explains how she gets the rashes]] that reveal she was actually infected with the flesh-eating disease and [[DeathBySex passing it on to loverboy]].
-->'''Paul:''' ''(While they are in the middle of having sex)'' Shouldn't we use a condom?
-->'''Marcy:''' It's okay, I'm healthy.
-->'''Marcy:''' ''(Later)'' Damn, Paul, you really did a number on my back!
* BonnieWright shows off hers in ''HarryPotterAndTheDeathlyHallows Part 1'' when, as Ginny, comes up to Harry and asks him to zip up her dress.
* In ''RaidersOfTheLostArk'', Marion Ravenwood's back in seen in the mirror by Belloq and it is lampshaded on the journey to the U-Boat pen.
* ''Film/CowboysAndAliens'' has this when Ella is reborn from the fire. While we see her bare back, Jake and most other male characters clearly see her front.
* Among all the other fanservice/partial nudity tropes it subscribes to, [[ReturnOfTheJedi Leia's slave outfit]] also has a large expanse of bare back, covered pretty much only by two thin wires holding the front on.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:LiveActionTV]]
* This happens in an episode of ''[[TwentyFour 24]]'', when Nina is forced to undress in front of Jack, so she doesn't try anything. She deliberately faces him, showing us her scarred back. Prison must have been rough.
* TheReveal of RepliCarter in ''{{Stargate SG-1}}'' involves this.
* Saffron in the ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' episode "Our Mrs. Reynolds".
** And Inara taking a sponge bath in the unaired pilot. Lucky sponge.
* Caprica-Six or Sharon Valerii [Athena] in ''[[Series/BattlestarGalacticaReimagined Battlestar Galactica]]'', and basically an excuse to have a sex scene ''and'' show off the glowing spines of the female Cylons (at least initially, as the concept [[strike:was forgotten]] [[RetCon would have made identifying Cylons too easy]]).
* Zhaan ("[[InnocentFanserviceGirl Is nudity a taboo in your culture?]]") and Chiana in ''Series/{{Farscape}}''.
** And Sikozu in season 4.
* T'Pol showed her interest to Tucker in ''StarTrekEnterprise'' this way.
* [[InnocentFanserviceGirl Parker]] from ''{{Leverage}}'' does this quite often. Usually in front of [[UnresolvedSexualTension Hardison]].
* The audience (and [[TheCaptain Sheridan]]) get this treatment on ''[[BabylonFive Babylon 5]]'' when the new PoliticalOfficer attempts [[DistractedByTheSexy to seduce him]].
* Rather surprisingly, this shows up in the pilot episode of ''{{The X-Files}}'' between Mulder and Scully. The case involved teenagers being returned from alien abduction with two small bumps on their lower back. While getting ready to take a shower, Scully finds two such marks on her own back, freaks out, and runs--in her underwear and red robe--to Mulder's hotel room to get his opinion. Mulder is understandably perplexed when she drops her robe and has a moment of pause. There is a shot of both the front of Scully in her undies and her bare back as Mulder inspects the bumps. They turn out to be bug bites, and for the rest of the series, Scully is noticeably more stoic and clothed.
** And how Chris Carter thought that this scene wouldn't escape romance-hungry viewers (Mulder and Scully were originally only supposed to be "platonic work partners") is insane.
* The British sitcom ''{{Coupling}}'' does this a couple of times - once with Sally (Kate Isitt) in series two and once with Jane (Gina Bellman) in series four. In each case the audience is treated to "the full backal", as the show puts it, but other characters see the front.
** Also once with Sarah Alexander's character.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:{{Magazines}}]]
* The ''Vanity Fair'' photo of [[HannahMontana Miley Cyrus]] that caused so much controversy in 2008.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:{{Music}}]]
* The PinkFloyd poster "Back Catalog"; naked women, with Pink Floyd album covers painted on their back.
* The cover of Sade's newest album ''Soldier of Love''. Bam.
* The TropeNamer is actually not about this trope. It's a song by JustinTimberlake about having proper swagger and romancing women.
* Music/LadyGaga's videos for "Bad Romance" and "Alejandro", although both incidences contain a certain amount of [[FanDisservice disturbing]] along with the sexy.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:NewMedia]]
* {{Lampshaded}} in ''{{Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series}}'' when Marik/[[SpellMyNameWithAnS Malik]] takes his shirt of to reveal a tattoo on his back. "Now watch, Fangirls, as I strip. Yea, get a load of that back. You '''''[[SoundEffectBleep (EFF)]]'''''ing love it, don't you!"
** Might be counted as FanDisservice in the original anime, once you see how exactly he received it, since in the ''original'' Japanese-language anime, it wasn't a tattoo at all; it was actually ''carved into the flesh of his back to the point of scarring.'' And look at how [[http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/File:Marik%27sBack.jpg intricate]] this thing is!
* [[http://silverwingfox.deviantart.com/ Silverwingfox's]] series of [[http://silverwingfox.deviantart.com/art/In-The-Black-209479645?q=gallery%3Asilverwingfox%2F8638920&qo=15 Disney girls]] in black dresses had this for [[Disney/{{Tarzan}} Jane Porter]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:VideoGames]]
* Miang from ''VideoGame/{{Xenogears}}'', after having sex with Ramsus. She's got a ModestyBedsheet to cover her hips, but Grahf is getting a good look at her bare front.
* The Wii game ''Enjoy Your Massage!'' has this as the gameplay. You massage the bare backs of attractive [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair blue haired]] women.
* In ''FearEffect'' the player is awarded with Hana's bare back after she drops her towel to [[DistractedByTheSexy distract an enemy]].

* In ''OutThere'', Miriam is seen like this occasionally [[http://outthere.keenspot.com/d/20091111.html]]; as are others, such as Rebecca, less frequently [[http://outthere.keenspot.com/d/20100501.html]].
* Used in ''ElGoonishShive'', when Grace has to [[http://egscomics.com/?date=2002-05-17 change shirts]] with [[ChivalrousPervert Tedd]] in the room.
* ''MegaTokyo'''s Miho joins the fun in [[http://megatokyo.com/strip/1319 this strip]], and throws in some BareYourMidriff and SideBoob for good measure. Despite the situation, she's [[YourMileageMayVary probably]] not giving Piro a show on purpose.

!!Backless dress variant:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime]]
* [[VisualNovel/UminekoNoNakuKoroNi Beatrice's]] dress shows quite a lot of back.
* Yoruichi and Soifon from ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' both have special uniforms that leave their shoulder blades exposed in order to use ''Shunko'', a special technique that concentrates energy on the arms and back, without ending up completely naked.
* We have yet to see it in-series, but one of ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' databooks shows that under her BlackCloak Konan wears a backless dress.
* Quite a few of the doji from ''KarakuridojiUltimo'', especially Ultimo and Jealous. Might be {{Squick}} since they're male, but [[ViewerGenderConfusion then]] [[PeripheryDemographic again]]...
* In ''RebuildOfEvangelion'', Asuka manages to pull a variant of this. The test-type plugsuit's torso material is incredibly sheer, and at one point she turns to show that it perfectly defines her back and the top of her rear. Yeah, VaporWear while your entire body is clothed is pretty impressive.
* [[BirdyTheMighty Birdy's]] outfit does this, especially in the Decode remake.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:{{Film}}]]
* [[WhoFramedRogerRabbit Jessica Rabbit]].
* Pepper Potts in the ''{{Film/Iron Man}}'' movie buys herself a backless dress "from Tony" for her birthday. She wears it to a gala event, where Tony shows up and HilarityEnsues when he asks her for a dance. She's rather nervous about it, and this is only exacerbated by the fact that she forgot to wear deodorant and is dancing with her {{Casanova}} boss in front of all the people she works with.
* Halle Berry's costume in ''Film/{{Catwoman}}'' was specifically cut so we could see her back move.
* Femme fatale spy in the 1973 film ''The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe'' meets her intended conquest at her door in a black dress that conceals everything from her neck to her wrists to her feet. Then she turns around, and [[http://image.toutlecine.com/photos/g/r/a/grand-blond-avec-une-cha-ii05-g.jpg her back is completely bare, down to butt-cleavage.]]
** Likewise done in the 1985 American remake, ''The Man With One Red Shoe''
* In the 1933 film ''Dinner at Eight'', GoldDigger Kitty Packard (JeanHarlow) says, during a party conversation about sunbathing: "You know, my skin's terribly delicate and I don't dare expose it." Then she turns around, [[HypocriticalHumor revealing her backless dress]].

* Ziva uncovered, er, under''cover'', as a singer in the sixth season opener of ''{{NCIS}}''.
** Not forgetting Abby's Marilyn Monroe costume in one of the Halloween episodes. Being Abby though, she compliments [=McGee=] on finding the photo on the camera she was looking for crime scene photos on.
* [[BlondeRepublicanSexKitten Ainsley Hayes]] in one episode of ''TheWestWing''. This being an AaronSorkin show when Sam commented on how attractive she looked, that led to a discussion of feminism and sexuality in the workplace.

* Shanoa from ''CastlevaniaOrderOfEcclesia'', which is [[JustifiedTrope necessary]] because she absorbs [[InstantRunes Glyphs]] through a large and intricate tattoo on her back. ...For an EmotionlessGirl, she sure does lift up her hair sensually.
* Shiki from ''SamuraiShodown'' wears a backless tight dress and her back sports a massive snake tattoo that... does nothing.
* Aribeth's fantasy girly armor in ''NeverwinterNights'' is rather open down the back. That suit of armor's + 7 AC bonus (before magical enhancements) is completely unjustified, as it exposes at least as much as it protects.
** [[BreastPlate It covers the important areas.]]
* Mai Shiranui from ''FatalFury'' and the ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters'' had one intro where she bares her back and more while wearing a traditional Japanese kimono. In ''KoFXIII'', she finally gets to demonstrate this trope by having a backless outfit.
* Screenshots of ''{{Bayonetta}}'' show the eponymous character in a variety of these, [[VaporWear all made out of her hair]].
** And let's not talk about the poster ads.
* Jen from ''{{Primal}}'', who also sports a PowerTattoo.
* Backless shirt seems to be what is worn by [[VideoGame/TalesOfHearts Kohak Hearts]].
* In ''LostOdyssey'', female pirate Seth Balmore's outfit seems to lack any sort of back above the waist, no doubt giving Jansen in the back row an eyefull.
* Noel's standard outfit in ''BlazBlue''.
* Aqua from ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep''. [[http://img.youtube.com/vi/gJPpbbJZbbU/0.jpg Hades would tap that.]]
** It got to the point that [[TetsuyaNomura Nomura]] actually had to censor the outfit's design. Her back used to go all the way down to below her waist.
* Yuna's regular outfit, and wedding dress in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' and her Gunner outfit in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2''

* ''Fracture''
-->'''Marcy:''' It's okay, I'm healthy.

!!Backless dress variant:

* [[WhoFramedRogerRabbit Jessica Rabbit]].
* JenniferConnelly in ''ABeautifulMind''.
* The dress Padmé wears in the lake house in ''AttackOfTheClones''.
* Felicity Shagwell in the second ''AustinPowers'' movie. Crikey!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:{{Literature}}]]
* Phedre's costume for the Longest Night masque in ''Kushiel's Chosen'' is deliberately cut so the entirety of her marque (full-length back tattoo) is visible. In her culture, marques are sported by courtesans who have completed their apprenticeships. A fully bared marque means its wearer is seeking business offers.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:LiveActionTV]]
--->'''Sam Seaborn''': ''Whoa, I didn't even see that thing from the back.''

[[folder:TabletopGames]]
* In the 3.5 of the Eberron Campaign Setting, the example character for the Dragonmarked Heir prestige class was depicted with such a dress, though for her; it had the added benefit of showing off her Dragonmark of Storm. * In ''Murder Among Friends'', Angela's red dress ''must'' be backless or nearly so, to inspire her husband's line "Lovely dress, but don't you have it on backwards?"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:VideoGames]]
* The Prince's main outfit in ''SuikodenV'' exposes his back like this. It probably doesn't help that [[ViewerGenderConfusion he takes after his]] [[HotMom mom]].
* [[http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs25/f/2008/130/9/e/Anna_Williams_V_by_lilykane.png Anna Williams]] from ''{{Tekken}}'' is all over this trope.
* Aika and Fina in ''VideoGame/SkiesOfArcadia''. Aika's isn't a dress, but it still shows the back.
* Persephone from ''GodOfWar: Chains Of Olympus''.
* Excella's dress from ''ResidentEvil5'' is this trope, the backless dress variant that is, to a T.
* Magoichi from ''SengokuBasara'' wears a backless [[OfCorsetsSexy corset]] has defies all the laws of physics by staying on her. Dammit.

* In ''BatmanAndMisterFreezeSubZero'', Barbara Gordon wears a backless dress to the fundraising party at the beginning.
* Ahsoka's new outfit in the ''StarWarsTheCloneWars'' episode "Heroes on Both Sides" has this.
* BettyBoop was maybe the first animated character to have this.

* RareMaleExample: In ''{{Berserk}}'', in a later chapter, the little witch Schierke shows significant interest in Guts' "strong back" in a blatant {{Estrogen Brigade Bait}} scene as she's helping heal his wounds and redo the protective runes over the Brand of Sacrifice on his neck.

* MarlonBrando in ''{{A Streetcar Named Desire}}''. Seriously, guys, take another look at the end of that "STEEELLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH" scene.

* We have yet to see it in-series, but one of ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' databooks shows that under her BlackCloak Konan wears a backless dress. In a rare male version, Kakuzu's backless shirt we ''[[HighOctaneNightmareFuel have]]'' seen, [[FanDisservice unfortunately.]]

** Might be counted as FanDisservice in the original anime, once you see how exactly he received the tattoo.
*** In the ''original'' anime (read:Japanese), it wasn't a tattoo at all; it was actually ''carved into the flesh of his back to the point of scarring.'' And look at how [[http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/File:Marik%27sBack.jpg intricate]] this thing is!

* The ''OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' anime has the twins putting a photoshopped picture of Haruhi's shirtless back on the club website, leading Tamaki to falsely conclude that they must've seen something while taking the picture. It's more egregious in the manga, where the twins put Haruhi's head on ''[[ShirtlessScene Tamaki's chest]]'' and Tamaki is still fooled into thinking it's real.
** Exactly how familiar can you expect someone to be with how they look shirtless from the back?
** Well, considering Haruhi is a woman, and Tamaki knows this, and the twins want people to think she is a man, they would photoshop her head onto a man's back...

* Riza Hawkeye in the manga version of ''FullmetalAlchemist'', this isn't so much {{Fanservice}} as that Riza's back [[spoiler: has a giant tattoo, and burn scars covering it]]. Of course, since it's [[GoodLookingPrivates Riza]], you could still call it Fanservice.
** Hell ''yes''. The [[spoiler: tattoo]] only [[FetishFuel adds to it]]. And when you consider the fact that Mustang would have needed to [[spoiler: study the tattoo for extended periods of time while learning the alchemy]]... And any bra would need to be opened...
** Hell, the fourth ending to Brotherhood prominently features her back. Fanservice much?
