** The game first launched with a rigid pitch that everyone was participating in a heavily-regulated league of sanctioned battles, using CombatByChampion in lieu of traditional wars. The issue with this setup is that it basically guarunteed there could be no escalation of outside stakes or resolution to existing ones; no one will have a cure for Trundle's perpetual leprosy, Amumu will never find out his past, Jax and Fiora will never prove they're the WorldsBestWarrior, no personal rivalries can be quashed, etc. Riot eventually realized this was also a constrain on ''establishing'' characters, and after [[TheArtifact gradually ignoring the League for many newer champions]] in lieu of contriving reasons for them to enlist, and by 2014, they decided to pull the plug on the setup and reboot its continuity without it.
