* ''Manga/GreatTeacherOnizuka'': Heavily downplayed with Tomoko, as she remains a klutzy ditz throughout, but her idol career does force her to become less airheaded and a bit more situationally aware.

* ''{{Film/Limitless}}'' and its [[{{Series/Limitless}} sequel series]] is about a pill called [=NZT-48=] [[GeniusSerum which can increase the mental capacity and acuity of a person's brain]] and how the protagonists' lives improve, and become dangerously complicated, when they take it. The effects and how effectively these new abilities can be used depends entirely on the person it would seem: Eddie, an educated aspiring author, takes [=NZT=] and proceeds to complete the first manuscript of a novel he's been struggling to write in about a day, then with a little bit of studying goes from a newbie day-trader with no experience to managing a multi-million dollar deal in a couple of months, [[spoiler: the film ending with Eddie on the fast-track to becoming a very popular Senator.]]. When a Russian loanshark takes it however, he treats it like a new designer recreational drug and the most impressive feat of his new intelligence is discovering this new thing called {{Website/Google}}.

He goes from being so dumb that he [[EpicFail catches the seat of his pants while fishing]] and is tricked into escorting his boss Arlong's prisoner Zoro to freedom to being the MrExposition of Sabaody Archipelago who's wise enough to know that antagonizing the Celestial Dragons is a terrible idea.

Contrast TookALevelInDumbass. SisterTrope to FlowersForAlgernonSyndrome, in which a character gains intelligence[[note]]and/or other traits[[/note]] temporarily, but [[StatusQuoIsGod returns to normal]] by the end of the story. For moments where one ''pretends'' to be a dumbass and eventually discards the facade, see ObfuscatingStupidity. Compare this trope to TookALevelOfSmartass, despite similar names, this one involves a character becoming smarter, or at least, less dumber than they used to be, while the other one involves a character becoming snarkier.

* On ''WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball'', Gumball and Darwin went from TooDumbToLive to a more normal level of intelligence after the first season. This was probably CharacterizationMarchesOn also as they were a mix of that, mischievous, OnlySaneMan and just naive. The OnlySaneMan characterization seems to be becoming the dominant one.

* Gourry Gabriev, in the ''LightNovel/{{Slayers}}'' anime series, is pretty much the resident IdiotHero and seems to get stupider in each season. [[OddlyNamedSequel2ElectricBoogaloo Evolution-R]], the fifth season, starts portraying him more akin to his novel self (who is not an IdiotHero but instead ObfuscatingStupidity for a number of reasons, including the fact he likes Lina explaining things to him/thinks she's cute when she's mad).

** Ash starts off as an IdiotHero who gradually matures and learns over the course of two series. However, while his Pokémon battling skills improve during ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesDiamondAndPearl'', he gets less intelligent in every regard that doesn't have to do with Pokémon battling, zigzagging this trope. And during ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesBlackAndWhite'' he completely hits the ResetButton, completely inverting this trope. He plays the trope completely straight in ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesXY'', however, and gains so much maturity and skill he doesn't even really qualify as an IdiotHero anymore (naive and reckless certainly, but not an idiot). He returns to idiocy in ''PokemonTheSeriesSunAndMoon'', but with the stipulation that he retains his battle competence, making him something of a GeniusDitz IdiotSavant.

* ''VideoGame/NintendoWars'': Several characters went through this in the transition from the first game to ''Black Hole Rising'':
** Andy, while still a WideEyedIdealist to a degree that unsettles his allies, is no longer a NaiveNewcomer who famously forgot what an airport was. He's considerably OutOfFocus in the second and third game's campaigns but whenever he does show up he's just as competent as any other CO.
** Olaf was the first game's StarterVillain and [[GeneralFailure a massive failure as a strategist]]. Not only has he had a HeelFaceTurn in the sequel, he's also no longer an idiot: he's instead a [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold gruff but ultimately dependable ally]].
** Kanbei in the first game barely considered tactics besides AttackAttackAttack until Sonja advised him otherwise... and even then he misused her advice in the worst ways possible. From the second game onwards he's a legitimate FourStarBadass for Yellow Comet, merely having a slight tendency towards HonorBeforeReason at worst.
** Eagle is no longer an obsessed BloodKnight who missed the ''painfully'' obvious signs that the object of his vendetta was innocent. He's a little headstrong, but otherwise frighteningly skilled AcePilot who's also AFatherToHisMen.

* Downplayed in ''Fanfic/MyHeroesReborn''. While a capable hero, Mirio Togata is rather BookDumb. However, after regaining his PastLifeMemories as [[spoiler:[[Manga/OnePiece Monkey D. Luffy]]]], the consensus is that compared to the idiot he was in that life, he's a genius.

* ''Fanfic/TotalDramaWorldTourDeluxe'': Lindsay ends up sneezing out a crayon at the Alps. She explains in a confessional that when she was six years old she stuffed a pack of crayons up her nose after being dared by her sister. She thought she sneezed them all out afterwards, but realizes that one stayed put and ended up penetrating her brain and affecting her memory, logic, and reasoning. After this, she starts remembering everyone's names and becoming more useful in challenges, effectively losing her DumbBlonde status.

* ''{{Manga/Doraemon}}'': The title character used to be BookDumb and one of the worst students in the Robot Academy. However, he probably got better from his early years, since nowadays he can [[EncyclopaedicKnowledge quote many facts about different subjects]] and is easily the most knowledgeable of the main cast (unless [[TheAce Dekisugi]] is around). That said, he's still a bit clumsy.

* Caboose from ''Machinima/RedVsBlue'' quickly became a rather extreme form of TheDitz. Come ''Recreation'', however, he's managed to regain much of his intelligence (and sanity), to the point that he is fully capable of rational thought and even [[spoiler:managed to repair and awaken Epsilon-Church]]. He's still fairly ditzy though.
