* PetTheDog: [[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheBadBatch Despite replacing the Clones with Stormtroopers]], Tarkin respects Crest's initiative in capturing Faazah's warehouse and pleasing Vader.

* VillainRespect: Sidious has been ''trying'' to invoke this between Tarkin and Vader and is irritated it's stuck in a holding pattern. The two men finally develop it by the novel's end.

** Said verbatim by Vader to Sergeant Crest, a particularly bumbling Stormtrooper. Despite it emphatically being "for the last time," Vader allows him to continue breathing, which seems slightly out of character for the usually failure-intolerant Dark Lord. [[spoiler: In fact, Crest ends up getting promoted to lieutenant over the course of the story. Perhaps Lord Vader was feeling somewhat sentimental?]]

*** Crest having served as clone trooper in specifically the 501st legion, otherwise known as Anakin Skywalker's legion, throughout the clone wars may also have had something to do with the sparing too.

* TrapIsTheOnlyOption: Before Vader and Tarkin depart for Murkhana to investigate the communications lead, Palpatine agrees with the obvious implication: that it's a trap. However, as he argues, "Sometimes there is more to be gained from stepping into a trap than by avoiding it. Particularly when you're interested in learning who set it."

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Officially, Tarkin doesn't know Palpatine is a Sith Lord or Vader's true identity. Unofficially, he's still been able to figure out both secrets anyway from the circumstantial evidence.

* FridgeLogic: In-universe example when Tarkin reflects on Palpatine's scarred appearance. The official story he gave to the Senate 5 years earlier remains that it was a Jedi 'assassination attempt' and a ferocious duel ensued in his office. However, as Tarkin privately notes, the story doesn't hold up to scrutiny; it doesn't explain ''how'' the Jedi Masters were actually killed, or ''how'' exactly Palpatine was scarred. So with those holes in the story, Tarkin's nursed his private suspicions of what actually happened (and has correctly deduced Palpatine's a Sith).

* SpottingTheThread: Tarkin reflecting on Palpatine's scarred appearance during ''Revenge of the Sith''. The official story he gave to the Senate 5 years earlier remains unchanged -- that it was a Jedi "assassination attempt" and a ferocious duel ensued in his office. However, as Tarkin privately notes, the story ''doesn't'' hold up to in-depth scrutiny. For instance, it doesn't explain ''how'' the Jedi Masters were actually killed, or ''how'' exactly Palpatine was scarred. So with those holes in the story, Tarkin's nursed his own private suspicions of what actually happened (and has correctly deduced Palpatine's a Sith).

* AdaptationalHeroism: Barely. Like in ''Legends'', Tarkin perpetuated an instance of mass deaths in the early days of the Empire. In ''Legends'', this was the Ghorman Massacre, where he responded to a peaceful protest by landing his ship on them, killing hundreds out of sheer callous sadism. In this novel, he is instead responsible for the Antar Atrocity, where he descended on a world taken over by the Separatists and mass arrested and executed thousands, including many Republic loyalists and operatives, to make an example of what will happen to worlds that don't surrender their Separatist holdouts. Still cruel, still evil, but at least there was a purpose to it and it was done in pursuit of a goal rather than ForTheEvulz.

** Evil is the wrong word, as he's talking about animals at the time (albeit chimp-level intelligent ones), but Tarkin's success during his RiteOfPassage came through engineering one in the ferocious veermok troop; having correctly predicted that the TheStarscream would use the distraction Tarkin provided as an opportunity to launch a coup against the current alpha, Tarkin then promptly killed the new alpha just as he was being acknowledged by the troop. The sudden removal of any candidate for leadership thew the troop into such disarray that not only did they cease all attempts to attack Tarkin, they abandoned their territory entirely and were never seen again.

* DramaticIrony: Having privately deduced Palpatine's Sith, Tarkin correctly concludes the Jedi's 'attempted assassination was to take out their ancestral enemy. However, Tarin incorrectly believes it was less about taking control of the Republic and more because the Jedi couldn't abide the idea of a Sith emerging as the hero of the war the Order had failed to stop and win. Tarkin of course doesn't know that Palpatine was actually PlayingBothSides and orchestrated the entire conflict.

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Despite being one of Palpatine's closest allies, Tarkin still doesn't know the Emperor is a Sith. However, between Vader's own Force abilities (and ties to Palpatine) and questions about the Jedi arrest attempt during ''Revenge'' which have never been satisfactorily answered, Tarkin has pretty much figured it out on his own.
** Likewise, Tarkin is not among those in the Empire who're aware of Vader's true identity. However, as with Palpatine's Sith abilities, there's enough circumstantial evidence (the timing of Vader's debut, his personal dislike of the Moff) for Tarkin to pretty much guess who's in the armor.

Added DiffLines:

* LeanAndMean: The narration notes that Tarkin's shoulders remain narrow and bony all his life (fitting the physique Peter Cushing had during his portrayal), though the wilderness-survival skills clearly show that [[StrongerThanTheyLook he is not lacking in physical strength and resilience]]. This serves to contrast him physically with Vader, whose towering height and great bulk are repeatedly mentioned.

Added DiffLines:

* PurpleProse: Tarkin's speech to Vader about the climax of his RiteOfPassage that prompted him to name his ship the ''Carrion Spike'' is much more detailed and in more flowery language than his usual clipped and concise manner of speaking. Presumably this is because it's so unusual for him to have a chance to talk with pride about this formative event in his life to somebody who's genuinely interested (he notes that what he can see of Vader's body language indicates that he is giving Tarkin his full attention for the whole speech, and how unusual this is) so he indulges himself a bit. [[WatsonianVersusDoylist Alternatively, unlike the other events of Tarkin's life that are mentioned in the book, this one is being spoken aloud by Tarkin himself rather than described by the narrator in Tarkin's memories, and Luceno thought such an important moment deserved more poetry than Tarkin would normally give it.]]
