Ogre Enchanted is a 2018 prequel to the beloved children's novel Ella Enchanted written by Gail Carson Levine.

Evie is a talented young healer in her small village who's happiest when she's working. However, things change for her one day when her best friend Wormy proposes marriage to her. Evie declines as she's not ready to think about marriage yet. As bad luck would have it though Lucinda from the original Ella Enchanted novel had shown up to bless the proposal. Enraged at Evie's rejection Lucinda curses her into the form of an Ogre and will only lift the curse upon someone proposing to her. Evie ends up finding herself going on a quest to see if she can break the spell or find her true love. Along the way, she ends up getting mixed up in some royal affairs...

This Book Contains Examples Of:

  • Always Chaotic Evil: Ogres are treated as such.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Evie and Wormy have been friends since they were children and Wormy is in love with her. Evie turns down his proposal though because she isn't sure if she feels the same way and doesn't want to risk their friendship. It takes the threat of almost being stuck as an Ogre forever and seeing him with another girl for Evie to realize she really does love him back. Thankfully it works out for them.
  • Con Man: This book really shows just how big of a con artist Ella's father Peter was. In this book alone he almost manages to trick his way into getting the throne.
  • Eyeof Newt: A lot of the ingredients Evie uses in her remedies fall into this. Especially Purpline AKA Dragon Pee.
  • Forced Transformation: The thing that sets off the story is Evie being turned into an Ogre. Later in the story Wormy gets turned into a squirrel by Lucinda. Both get better though.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Due to its nature as a prequel several things are clear right from start. Sir Peter will marry Lady Eleanor. Jerrold won't end up with Evie because he has to marry Daria so they can be prince Char's parents. However since Evie and Wormy weren't characters in the original novel their fates are up in the air.
  • Love Triangle: A minor one as Evie finds herself torn between Jerrold and Wormy but once she finds Jerrold is in love with Daria she accepts it.
  • Poor Communication Kills: For some reason as part of her curse Lucinda makes it so Evie can't tell anyone she's a cursed human. Even people who know the truth either because they were there when the transformation happened or managed to figure it out can't say it. This leads to Evie nearly getting lynched by a mob more than once.
