Moara cu Noroc (The Lucky Mill) is a Romanian psychological and realist novella wrritten by Ioan Slavici and published in 1881. The story takes place in late 19th century Transylvania and is centered around a shoemaker named Ghiță and his family who buy a pub named "Moara cu Noroc". Everything goes great until a mobster by the name of Lică Sămădău appears and proposes Ghiță to join him in exchange for even more money. Ghiță accepts and he is happy with the deal but later starts feeling guilty that the money he earned was obtained trough crime.


Moara cu Noroc contains examples of:

  • Becoming the Mask: When Ghiță sent his wife to seduce Lică while he goes after the Gendarmery she let herself be seduced by him..
  • Big Bad: Lică Sămădău
  • Capitalism Is Bad: Basically the whole point of the story.
  • Go Seduce My Archnemesis: At the climax of the book Ghiță sends his wife Ana to seduce Lică in order to keep him busy wile he goes after the Gendarmery.
  • Greed: What motivated Ghiță to associate himself with Lică.
  • The Hero Dies: While it's a stretch to call him a hero, Ghiță is murdered at the end of the book by Lică's men
  • Karma Houdini: Lică kills himself before he could get arrested.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ghiță starts feeling guilty after getting money earned trough illegal means.
    Ghiță: My poor children... you no longer have an honest man for a father... your father is a crook!
  • Only Sane Man: The Mother-In-Law and the kids are the only characters to do no wrong throughout the entire book.
  • Voice of Reason: Ghiță's mother-in-law warned him not to let himself seduced by greed.
