Congratulations. You just inherited a house in hell.

Maynard's House is a 1980 horror novel written by Herman Raucher, best known as the screenwriter for the 1971 war film Summer of '42.

In it, a Vietnam veteran named Austin inherits a house from his army buddy, and strange things happen soon after he moves in.

Maynard's House contains examples of:

  • 20 Minutes into the Past: Written in 1980, the novel takes place during the winter of 1972 to 1973.
  • Old, Dark House: Maynard's cabin is a small hovel in the middle of nowhere without central heating, electricity, or plumbing.
  • The Vietnam Vet: Austin is a particularly topical example, as he was just recently discharged before the events of the novel.
