Heartwarming / Yumi and the Nightmare Painter

Go To

  • Akane and the others "adopting" Yumi into the group. Especially impressive considering Yumi's horrendous first impression.
  • When Painter goes to his friends for help, it is Tojin who is the first to agree. Partly because, well, what do they have to lose? But mostly because Nikaro was always the only one who really took their job seriously.
  • There's something oddly endearing about how, when Akane asks what Painter will do if it turns out he's just delusional, he stops and considers it. After seriously thinking it over, he tells her that if he was wrong and just hallucinating this entire time (with the shroud responding to emotion, it's not entirely impossible), he will accept professional help. Akane gives him a tender hug.
  • Painter recognizing the human souls at the hearts of the stable nightmares, and proceeding to paint them back into their human forms, temporarily freeing them from the machine's control.
  • Painter bringing Yumi back to life by painting her on his blank mural, willing her to come back because he remembers her, defying her final words to him that nobody remembered her, and then her staying because they both believe she deserves to live
And at the end of it all, when someone finally thought to check on him, they found Painter huddled against the wall beneath a masterpiece of incredible caliber, holding a young woman tight in his arms. As real as anyone else. Because she wanted to be.
  • Rather than taking credit for organizing the painters who saved the city, Painter gets everyone to agree to give the credit to the only painter who died in the defense.
  • Despite Painter's parents not being supportive of his career choice as a Nightmare Painter, as soon as they heard about the battle at Kilahito, they rushed there to make sure their son was alright (and helped finally convince Painter's friends that Yumi was never their daughter, and is actually his girlfriend).
  • Design wills her noodle shop to Painter and Yumi before she and Hoid leave. The two of them later rename the shop to the "Noodle Princess".
    • They even hire Masaka as part of their staff. And according to Hoid, she eventually grows comfortable letting people know her true nature, implying that the Sleepless have been accepted into the wider Cosmere.
